Recap by phillip woo

Well backed late, Ninja Derby kept on nicely after barging his way into the open 250m out for a first local win at his 17th start. He was able to build on a career-best second last time out. Favourite Go Go Go had his chance but found one too good after slotting one off the rail with cover in midfield. He continues to race well without winning. Turtle Again closed well to fill a placing after settling on the rail behind midfield. He had been out of form but relished a return the course and distance of a win in November. Punted late, Fruity Warrior whacked on one-paced after a prominent run one off the fence. He should find his mark in this grade. Sunny Baby made a mild bid after settling on the fence in better than midfield. He has only gone OK in two of his past four starts despite a return to the level of a win in January. Harry's Hero ran on without threatening after travelling one off the rail behind midfield. Vulcanus was on his tippy toes over the last 100m after dictating the run from gate six. He has had an uneventful first campaign but is only a three-year-old.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Horse No 12 NINJA DERBY (H339) M Chadwick K H Chan (VULCANUS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that approaching the first turn leaving the 1400 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of NINJA DERBY, resulting in NINJA DERBY having to be checked to avoid the heels of VULCANUS.

Having regard to Jockey Chan holding confirmed riding engagements for the last racemeeting and in accordance with previous practices, he was fined the sum of $5,000 in lieu of a one-day suspension.

In assessing penalty, the Stewards determined the carelessness grade 2 and the consequences grade 2 and also considered his very good race riding record.

As a result, NINJA DERBY made contact with RUNNING BOY and was held up for a short distance thereafter.
