- Artificial intelligence can help automate tedious tasks allowing people to focus on important projects or activities
- AI-enabled tools such as ChatGPT are gaining traction in Hong Kong and around the globe
Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionised the way humans interact with technology. AI can help automate tedious tasks that would otherwise take up valuable time, allowing people to focus on more important projects or activities. Additionally, AI can be used as an aid for decision making by providing data-driven insights into complex problems leading to faster and possibly better solutions.
AI is already being used in many industries such as healthcare, finance, transport, and education-enabled businesses and governments to create high-performing ecosystems capable of providing services efficiently to users.
For instance, in healthcare, AI systems are able to rapidly analyse large data sets so that doctors can make better-informed decisions about patient care more quickly than ever before. In the finance sector, machine learning algorithms can identify fraud faster than humans can. In transport, advanced navigation systems allow drivers access to real-time traffic intelligence, enabling them to avoid congestion and get from points A to B more smoothly.
Hong Kong’s Innovation & Technology sector thrives on diversity
Alex Zhavoronkov is the founder and CEO of Insilico Medicine, a global, clinical-stage, AI-powered drug discovery and development company that is based in Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporation (HKSTP). In an interview with BBC, he said, “To me, AI represents hope.”
Insilico Medicine uses AI as a tool in pharmaceutical research and development. Zhavoronkov added that AI “allows us to go into drug discovery much faster, go after much more challenging biological and chemical problems with higher confidence, and reduce the risk in drug discovery.”
In pharmaceutical research, Insilico Medicine is providing end-to-end systems utilising AI as a tool to de-risk and democratise biotech and enable new entrants into the industry.
AI-enabled tools such as ChatGPT have become a hot topic, with the app gaining approval for use at some Hong Kong institutions and banned at others. ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool that can be used to answer questions and help with tasks such as composing emails, essays and code. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is rapidly transforming various aspects of our lives, and its potential applications are vast and varied.
Nixon Chau, managing director and general manager at SenseTime Hong Kong, based in HKSTP, shared at this year’s Digital Economy Summit how SenseTime’s large-language model “SenseNova” could help businesses enhance productivity, efficiency, and decision-making processes.
“I also shared how AI can impact individuals, particularly in the realm of employment. I emphasised the need for individuals to upskill and embrace AI as their tool in order to remain competitive in the new AI era,” Chau added.
AI is a powerful tool that can augment human strengths and increase productivity by developing better workflows, processing huge amounts of data quickly, and managing repetitive tasks. Nevertheless, the jobs that require human interaction, creativity and problem-solving skills are not that easily replaced by AI.
