‘BTS McDonald’s Meal’ review: We stan the Cajun sauce
- While there’s nothing out of the ordinary about chicken nuggets and fries, the dipping sauces are the stars of the show
- Fans will love the purple packaging, and may even hang on to the boxes as a souvenir of their favourite K-pop band’s collaboration
The BTS McDonald’s meal has been a highly anticipated drop from the fast food chain since it was announced, and it didn’t disappoint. We arrived at the McDonald’s on Castle Road just before 11am, thankfully missing out on any kind of queue.
The meal cost HK$43.50, and consisted of a 9 piece Chicken McNugget box, medium french fries and a medium coke. BTS stans will enjoy the exclusive purple packaging the food is served in, and we can imagine that some will even want to hold onto it as a souvenir.
Although there’s nothing new or innovative about the food, what makes the meal unique are the two dipping sauces that come with the McNuggets - Sweet Chili and Cajun.
The Sweet Chili sauce is akin to what is already served with the McWings in Hong Kong, but it’s got a little extra depth to it - slightly thicker and possibly a bit more heat? Also, peeling off the lid was much easier than tearing open and squeezing sauce packets, so points for convenience.
Chicken and sweet chili are a tasty combination, so it’s no surprise that this worked well. It’s hard to mess up something that’s already good! We’d rate it 8/10.
Now to the star of the show, the Cajun sauce. It genuinely took us by surprise. Creamy, savoury and delightfully spicy (but still mild), this was an excellent pairing with the McNuggets. The BTS boys made the right choice with this sauce, and, let’s be honest, food is just a vessel for sauce.
7 thoughts we had watching the new MV for “Butter”
Looking at the ingredients, it’s a spicy honey mustard with interesting additions like pineapple juice, for a bit of zing and depth of flavour. We haven’t been this excited about a new McDonald’s item since the seaweed flavoured Shake Shake powder, so we’re hoping that popular demand will make this sauce a staple. Definitely a 10/10.
The fries were good, but McDonald’s fries usually are. They were tasty on their own, and paired well with both dipping sauces. Coca Cola was a nice, refreshing choice to wash it all down with, and it was nice to have a bit of sweet after all the savoury.
Overall, it was a tasty way to start the day, and whether or not you’re in the BTS ARMY, we would recommend getting the meal just for the Cajun sauce.
