At least 10 Hong Kong schools closed yesterday due to the Covid-19 virus.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Centre for Health Protection’s Communicable Diseases branch, said all schools might have to close again if the situation did not improve.

Ursus Fitness gym in Sai Ying Pun was found to have a “super-spreading” cluster which affected international schools, banks and other gyms. As a result, more than 240 people were sent to quarantine. At least 17 customers and staff members at the gym tested positive for the virus in just two days.

In addition to closures at multiple English Schools Foundation campuses, as well as Carmel School and four others in Tin Shui Wai, Pak Tin Catholic Primary School in Sham Shui Po suspended in-person classes after a 12-year-old student tested preliminary positive.

Po Leung Kuk Laws Foundation College also suspended classes after a teacher had a preliminary positive test.

In a late-night announcement on Thursday, the government ordered anyone – including staff, students and visitors – who had been at Ursus Fitness for more than two hours between February 26 and last Thursday to take a Covid-19 test by Saturday.
