For companies in the tech space, diversity is more important than ever. That’s because employers accept the evidence that having people with different backgrounds and perspectives leads to better problem solving, greater creativity, and more innovation in the workplace.

It has also been shown that companies with diverse teams find it easier to attract top talent. They understand the value of new ideas and individual experience. And they see that people with unique skill sets should be celebrated for their potential and for the contributions they can make to the success of any team or organisation.

These days, companies involved in the Innovation and Technology (I&T) sector often lead the way in that respect, and they are creating job opportunities which clearly reflect those ideals.

According to Christine So, the founder and chief executive of Hosbby, a digital platform that enables talented individuals to earn an income by sharing their skills, greater diversity makes perfect sense.

It promotes collaboration and learning and encourages everyone to give their best by causing them to question assumptions and consider alternatives.

“It’s all about talent,” says So, who is also the Co-Founder and COO of ARTBAT Live, a platform for digital artists to showcase their work on Web3. “We have an AR developer who grew up in Taiwan and lives in Finland. We have developers from the Philippines and India. Creativity and expertise are prerequisites in my business. The more diverse a team is, the more input is generated.”

As many Hong Kong-based I&T companies are finding, that outlook leads to a dynamic and inclusive work environment. People are respected for what they do, with the focus on achieving together as a team. And the other factors that make people individuals, whether related to culture, gender, religion or anything else, are simply accepted as a non-issue.

For example, So was born with a congenital defect and had her right leg amputated soon after birth. But that was no reason to stop her going on to major in history and politics at the University of Hong Kong and participating in the incubation programme run by The Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP).

Subsequently, she opted for a career in technology, believing that is a field where she can make a real impact. In particular, she has found that working as a tech entrepreneur allows her to “keep learning and growing” and continues to present all kinds of new opportunities.

When talking to jobseekers, So emphasises that they should never feel limited by stereotypes. But she also points out that they should focus on developing skills, find roles where they can shine, and remember that the tech sector offers many exciting possibilities.
