From the Edge of Tomorrow to Top Gun, here are eight Hollywood sequels to keep an eye out for

We know you cannot wait to see the latest reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. But there are more movie sequels on the way, and here are eight Hollywood spin-offs you should watch out for.
1 Edge of Tomorrow 2
Edge of Tomorrow starred Tom Cruise as non-combat public relations officer William Cage, a man who has to relive the same day over and over again until he defeats a group of aliens that have landed in Germany. Directed by Doug Liman and with the stellar Emily Blunt playing Cruise’s tough-as-nails love interest, the 2014 film grossed more than US$370 million worldwide and received largely positive reviews from critics. The sequel was confirmed by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote the film’s screenplay, in an interview in April 2016.
2 Real Steel 2
The first Real Steel movie stars Hugh Jackman as an ex-boxer who trains a robot called “Atom” piloted by his son Max to take part in a boxing tournament against more powerful machines. Real Steel, which took in more than US$290 million at the box office, was well received by viewers but received mixed reviews. Since the film’s release, there have been rumours about a possible sequel, with director Shawn Levy discussing in several interviews last year that it could happen.
3 The Karate Kid 2
The Karate Kid (2010) starred Jaden Smith in the title role, with Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan playing the role of his kung fu master. It is a remake of the 1984 Karate Kid film and chronicles the journey of Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) as he moves from the American city of Detroit to China and uses kung fu to tackle the bullies in his school. The script for The Karate Kid 2 is being developed.
4 Top Gun: Maverick
In May, Tom Cruise announced that shooting for the sequel to the Hollywood blockbuster Top Gun would begin next year. The original Top Gun, also starring Cruise, is considered a cult classic. Made on a budget of US$15 million, the 1986 film raked in US$356.8 million globally. As a result, the expectations from the sequel are likely to be sky high.
5 National Treasure 3
The National Treasure films focus on the adventures of treasure hunter Benjamin Gates (Nicolas Cage). The second film in the series was released way back in 2007. However, Cage confirmed that the script for the third instalment is being written, but did not give an exact date as to when the film would hit cinemas.
6 World War Z 2
In the first World War Z film, Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), a former United Nations investigator, travels around the world trying to find a way to stop a zombie apocalypse. It was Pitt’s most successful film, making more than US$540 million worldwide in 2013. Paramount Pictures was hoping to release a sequel this year, alongside The Mummy. However, it was postponed due to delays in production and is now likely to come out next year or 2019.
7 The Equalizer 2
The Equalizer was a 2014 action thriller starring Denzel Washington as an ex-CIA agent who takes down an entire Russian crime ring by himself. The film is based on the TV show of the same name. In June 2015, Sony Pictures announced that they would make a sequel, with Washington playing the lead role once again. It is due out in September 2018.
8 San Andreas 2
The 2015 disaster film, San Andreas, revolves around helicopter pilot Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson), who has to make a dangerous journey with his ex-wife to save their daughter following a massive earthquake in California. It made more than US$470 million worldwide. San Andreas 2 is also set to stars Johnson and is due to be released in 2018 or 2019.
