Matthew Chadwick is confident Red Elegance can continue his stellar run of form when the sprinter bids for consecutive wins in Sunday’s Class Three Zhuhai Handicap (1,000m) at Happy Valley.
Red Elegance has become a specialist over the city circuit’s minimum trip since switching to the course and distance in June, collecting two wins and a second from three outings.
He recorded his career-best performance when surging to victory from a wide gate in his seasonal reappearance on September 25, and Chadwick believes there could be more to come.
“He had to do it the tough way,” Chadwick said. “I thought I was going to get in at one point and then I got posted wide, but he did what we thought he would do.

“His form was really good coming into the race and he’s obviously learned a bit from last year because it was quite hard to get him to switch off and a few things like that.”
After he burst onto the scene with a dominant debut win for trainer Jamie Richards in April last year, Red Elegance failed to return to the winners’ enclosure from eight further starts for the handler.
The son of Toronado switched to Douglas Whyte’s stable and knocked on the door on his first two outings before a switch in venue did the trick on June 12.
Red Elegance stretched to an impressive two-and-a-quarter-length win under Chadwick and went close to following it up with another success in July, where he found only Cody Mo Wai-kit’s Atomic Force too strong.
“If he puts it all together again, he’ll run another good race,” Chadwick said.
“What’s good about him is he’s doing a lot of things better. He’s jumping well, he can switch off when he’s in a good position and when you ask him to accelerate, he has that turn of foot.”
Red Elegance carries 131 pounds and jumps from barrier six in the 12-runner contest, with Chadwick aiming to continue his good start to the season at the rare Happy Valley day meeting.
Sitting sixth in the jockeys’ championship with eight wins this term, Chadwick hops aboard nine gallopers on the 10-race programme.
His other notable rides include last-start winner Victorythirtythree in the Class Four Kwangtung Cup (1,000m) and debutant Lucky Combination in the Class Three Zhaoqing Handicap (1,200m).
A winner of one of his two pre-import starts in Australia, Lucky Combination will jump from gate three.
“He’s been trialling OK and he’s definitely improving a bit,” Chadwick said.
“He needs to start running and obviously he’ll improve after his first run and after a bit more experience in Hong Kong.”
