With a lengthy winless streak broken, Angus Chung Yik-lai hopes to build on the momentum of his breakthrough victory when he rides Gustosisimo at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.
Battling through a slow start to the season, the reigning Tony Cruz Award winner snapped a drought of 67 rides without success when he booted home Happy Tango in Sunday’s Class Four Kwangtung Cup (1,000m) at the city circuit.
It was only Chung’s second triumph of the term, with his first back on September 15 aboard Team Happy at Sha Tin.
“It’s been frustrating,” Chung said of his campaign so far.
“It hasn’t broken my confidence. The time will come, we still have a long way to go [this season]. What I can do now is just the same thing – working hard, waiting for the right horses to come in, right barriers and right races.”

Gustosisimo headlines Chung’s book of four rides at the Valley on Wednesday night, with the Cruz-trained gelding set for a competitive Class Three Hing Yip Handicap (1,200m).
On his stable debut after two unplaced runs for Jamie Richards last term, Gustosisimo fought bravely on the speed to only be beaten a short head when second to Kyrus Dragon under Chung.
“It was a very good run,” Chung said. “His trials were very good before that. I expect him to improve a little bit from that race. He probably just got tired the last 100m and laid in. He didn’t finish very strong, but I’m very happy with his progress now.
“I think when he came to the stable, he was a nervous horse and always using too much energy. Hopefully after the run, he calms down a little bit and doesn’t sweat too much before the race and can perform really well.”
Complicating Chung’s task on Wednesday night is a wide draw in barrier 10 and a solid field, which includes the progressive Divano, last-start Valley winner Swift Ascend and consistent performers Scotch Tycoon and Super Joy N Fun.
“[Barrier 10] is not ideal, especially because there are a lot of fast horses inside,” Chung said.
“Hopefully the pace can be a little bit quicker and I can sit fourth or fifth, if I can. It’s very difficult from barrier 10. Last time we had barrier seven but there was no speed inside, so it was easier for him. This time it’s tricky.
“It’s a really good race and he performed very well last time, so hopefully he can perform again.”
Gustosisimo won three of his six starts under the same name in Australia pre-import.
Flying Silver, Red Maverick and Hero Warrior are Chung’s other rides at the Valley on Wednesday night.
