Benno Yung Tin-pang’s treatment for the serious illness he has been battling for much of 2024 is “progressing well”, the Jockey Club has confirmed in its first update on the veteran trainer’s health battle.
However, Yung – who hasn’t been seen on track this season – has informed officials “it is not possible at this point in time for him to say when he anticipates being able to resume attendance at his stables and race meetings”.
With Yung sitting bottom of the trainers’ premiership with one win from 47 runners, the Jockey Club has assured the racing public it is closely monitoring the arrangements the 65-year-old has put in place to keep his stable operating.
These include “multiple telephone communications with his assistant trainer, Roy Cheung [Hon-wai], each day” to set work and race plans and provide written feeding plans for all horses, as well as producing written riding instructions for all runners.
Cheung is sending Yung daily videos of trot ups, while Yung is keeping a close eye on all barrier trials and regularly discussing them with his assistant.
Yung is also maintaining regular communication with his vet and his owners via telephone calls and WhatsApp messages.
Yung’s stable is currently experiencing the worst drought in Hong Kong, will his dry spell of 37 runners without a winner dating back to September 11.
