Andrea Atzeni is eyeing another successful raid on Australia after picking up the ride on in-form Godolphin galloper Zardozi for the Group One Caulfield Cup (2,400m) on October 19.

Atzeni jetted in to land April’s Group One Sydney Cup (3,200m) aboard Ciaron Maher’s Circle Of Fire at Randwick and hopes to orchestrate another profitable hit-and-run mission next weekend.

After finishing a narrow second behind Boniface Ho Ka-kui’s Land Legend in Saturday’s Group One The Metropolitan (2,400m) at Randwick, the James Cummings-trained Zardozi will carry a feather weight in the Caulfield Cup.

“It’s a nice ride to pick up with a light weight and obviously James knows how to win these big races,” Atzeni said.

“Obviously winning the Sydney Cup helped my profile [in Australia] and with all these light rides coming up in these good races, it’s always nice to pick up the spares.

“I’ve ridden for Godolphin many times and ridden Group One winners in the Godolphin colours, so it’s nice to be back riding for them at Group One level.

“I was also retained rider for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid – I know it’s not Godolphin but it’s part of the family.”

Victorious in last year’s Group One VRC Oaks (2,500m), Zardozi is around a $13 chance for the Caulfield Cup with overseas fixed-odds bookmakers, with Land Legend, Eliyass and Buckaroo – who recently took out the Group One Underwood Stakes (1,800m) under Joao Moreira – ahead of her in the market.

Atzeni has ridden in Melbourne before, finishing 17th aboard Roger Varian’s My Ambivalent in the 2014 Group One Melbourne Cup (3,200m), but he has never plied his trade at Caulfield.

“I rode in the Melbourne Cup but I’ve never ridden at Caulfield. I’ll have a walk of the track when I get there,” said the Italian jockey.

Atzeni won’t be alone in making the trek Down Under, with Karis Teetan (Coco Sun) and Ben Thompson (Sayedaty Sadaty) also booked to ride in the Caulfield Cup.

Zac Purton swooped in to snare Caulfield Cup glory while based in Hong Kong, taking out the 2014 running aboard Japanese raider Admire Rakti.

Before turning his attention to Australia, Atzeni will jump aboard one of Hong Kong’s highest-rated gallopers, Voyage Bubble, in the best race of the season so far – this Sunday’s Group Two Sha Tin Trophy (1,600m).

Atzeni will partner Ricky Yiu Poon-fai’s 125-rated charge for the first time and will be hoping the six-year-old can recapture the form that saw him storm to victory in January’s Group One Stewards’ Cup (1,600m).

Voyage Bubble will come up against fellow Group One winner Beauty Eternal this weekend, as well as the likes of Beauty Joy, Galaxy Patch, Straight Arron and Chancheng Glory.
