The role of sex education

Janesha Rai, Pope Paul VI College

It has become increasingly apparent that extensive sex education is not provided to youngsters in many parts of the world. There is an urgent need for the youth to be taught the basics of birth control and more about sexual health, which is crucial to prevent teenage pregnancies.

Hong Kong’s educational institutions are jam-packed with various syllabuses, remedial classes, and other extracurricular activities. This leaves sex education at the bottom of the priority list. Besides, the majority of teachers are not experts on topics ranging from sexual health to raising awareness for making healthy sexual decisions.

Nearly one in seven Hong Kong secondary schools do not teach sex education. Even those who do, do not provide a comprehensive overview of sex, which keeps students in the dark.

The absence of comprehensive sex education in the schools in Hong Kong is a pressing issue that is not only influenced by society but also by parental factors.

It is pivotal that we address this problem and prioritise the well-being of future generations.

Mental health woes

Daniel Lam, Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School

I am writing to express my concern about the mental health of Hong Kong students. Despite government claims, the increasing number of student suicides due to extreme stress reveals an unresolved, worsening problem. This situation, likely exacerbated by the uncertain global economic outlook, is disheartening. It is crucial for the government to take action and provide support to address this deep-rooted problem and ensure the well-being of our future pillars.

The primary source of stress for Hong Kong students is academic pressure. Recent statistics reveal that a majority of students view academic results as their main stressor. To address this situation, the highest priority should be gradually transforming the education system.

The government’s passive stance, ignoring the situation, is very unreasonable. With greater attention, these tragedies could have been prevented. However, it is never too late to bring about change. The current situation emphasises the urgent need to adjust the education system and create a healthier learning environment for students. Teenagers are the future pillars of society, and the government should not wait for their collapse.

Rising issue of bullying

Bullying is a widespread issue in school environments. Bullies target others because they may have been victims themselves, wanting others to experience what they have endured. Another reason could be jealousy towards the victim’s achievements or possessions, such as grades or wealth.

In the age of technology, cyberbullying has become the most prevalent form of bullying. Cyberbullies attack their victims on social media, which may go unnoticed by teachers. If children or teenagers experience cyberbullying, they may withdraw from social media and exhibit drastic changes in behaviour.

It is not uncommon to hear from both local and international news that many teenagers have chosen to end their lives due to unbearable cyberbullying, with no one managing to help them in time. If we sense or witness bullying, it is crucial to immediately inform a teacher. We should never be bystanders when we witness someone being bullied.

In conclusion, although bullying is a common problem, we must not turn a blind eye and allow it to flourish.

Taking action to help and stop bullying is imperative.

Importance of individuality

In a world driven by trends, it is essential to remember the importance of embracing our style. While following trends can be tempting, it is crucial to dress to reflect our individuality. Fashion is not just about clothes; it’s a powerful tool for self-expression. It’s a way for us to showcase our unique personalities and creative spirits, breaking free from societal norms and expectations.

By choosing to dress in our own style, we not only set ourselves apart but also inspire others to do the same. Blindly following trends can be a trap, leading to a lack of uniqueness and a sense of conformity. It’s far more fulfilling to wear clothes that align with our personal tastes, preferences, and comfort.

By doing so, we can create our own fashion statements that reflect our values and avoid the pitfalls of conformity.

Moreover, developing our style fosters self-confidence and self-acceptance. When we dress according to our preferences, we feel comfortable in our skin, which radiates positivity and authenticity to those around us.

Let us encourage individuality and celebrate diversity in fashion. Embracing our style empowers us to express ourselves freely and boldly.
