Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) trainee apprentice Ivy Lam is in a stable condition after being airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) after a nasty fall at South Australia’s Gawler racecourse on Monday afternoon.

The HKJC confirmed that Lam fell when her mount, Jacobs Gate, suffered a heart attack mid-race in the seventh event on the Gawler programme, with media in Australia reporting the 23-year-old jockey suffered head injuries.

“Lam has been sent to hospital where she is receiving immediate medical care,” the HKJC said in a statement.

“The club’s head of racing talent training and headmistress of the Apprentice Jockeys’ School, Amy Chan [Lim-chee], is travelling to Australia to offer all necessary support to Lam and her family.”

Racing SA confirmed on social media on Monday night that Lam was “in a stable condition” and that she “regained consciousness prior to being airlifted to the RAH, where she is currently undergoing scans”.

One of two Hong Kong apprentices cutting their teeth in Adelaide, Lam is indentured to Gordon Richards and Damien Moyle and has ridden 16 winners since beginning her career in Australia in January.

She last tasted success with victory aboard The Stalker for her bosses at Balaklava on October 2.

The last race on the Gawler card was postponed.
