Charlie Appleby has confirmed Rebel’s Romance will return to Hong Kong for the Vase (2,400m) in December as the Godolphin trainer turns his attention to Glorious Goodwood this week.

Appleby has pencilled in the Group One feature on Longines Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) day for Rebel’s Romance after his brave third in the Group One King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2,400m) at Ascot last weekend.

The globetrotting star was far from disgraced behind French galloper Goliath.

That was his first run since his historic Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) triumph at Sha Tin in May, when he became the first overseas raider to win the staying contest.

“We were delighted with the performance he put in in the King George. It was a tough race, it was a gruelling race, but he maintained that gallop all the way to the line,” Appleby said.

“He’s come out of the race well. We were toying with a few options with him, but our main target really will be working back from the Vase, as we planned before the race.

“Whether we go to Germany first, or whether we go back to America, but like I say, his main target will be the Vase as we stand at the moment.”

Rebel’s Romance delivered Appleby his first Hong Kong success and Godolphin’s first since Mastery’s 2010 triumph in the Vase when he cruised home by two lengths in the Champions & Chater Cup.

Appleby and Godolphin are eyeing further Group One success on day two of Glorious Goodwood, with Notable Speech set for another clash with Rosallion in the Group One Sussex Stakes (1,600m) on Wednesday.

Notable Speech got the better of Rosallion in his Group One 2,000 Guineas (1,600m) win at Newmarket in May, before the latter turned the tables with an impressive victory in the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes (1,600m) at Ascot last start.

Notable Speech could only manage seventh in the son of Dubawi’s first defeat at start five. He started his career with three consecutive wins on Kempton’s all-weather track before becoming the first horse in 86 years to win the 2,000 Guineas having not raced as a juvenile.

“Notable Speech has had a little break since Royal Ascot and hasn’t missed a beat heading into this,” Appleby said.

“His run in the St James’s Palace Stakes was obviously disappointing and it was a strange race to watch as he didn’t run through the line at all. We had him checked out by the vets afterwards and nothing came to light.

“He looks fantastic at the moment and we couldn’t be happier with his work. He has been showing us all the right signs and we are very much looking forward to it.”

Rosallion is chasing a fourth success at the elite level for Richard Hannon, who rates the Blue Point colt on a similar level to his father Richard Sr’s former stable star, Canford Cliffs.

“If he wins the Sussex, he will be,” Hannon said.

“He’s also won a Group One as a two-year-old, which a lot of very good horses don’t. I think he’s already in that bracket, it’s whether he can go out of that bracket and out the other side. Time will tell. We’re very hopeful he’ll run a massive, massive race.”

The Jockey Club will simulcast Wednesday’s seven-race card at Goodwood, with the first jumping at 8.50pm Hong Kong time.
