A bullish Danny Shum Chap-shing has pinpointed Moments In Time as the pick of his three-pronged attack on Wednesday night’s Class Two feature at Happy Valley.

Shum returns to the city circuit on the back of a brace last week with a strong chance of landing The EWO Challenge Trophy (1,650m) with Moments In Time, Chill Chibi and Helene Feeling representing the stable.

The 64-year-old saddles three of the 10-runner field and rates two-time course winner Moments In Time his best chance, with the four-year-old stepping into calmer waters after his gutsy front-running fourth in the Group One Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m).

“I’m very happy looking at the race,” Shum said. “Tony Cruz’s horse [Outgate] is also very good though.

“I think he [Moments In Time] is the best of the three, but Chill Chibi has a chance as well.”

A Chilean Group One winner during his pre-import career, Moments In Time got off the mark at the seventh time of asking in Hong Kong with a dominant two-and-a-quarter-length win in March under Ellis Wong Chi-wang.

He backed up his 1,800m victory at Happy Valley on his next start over the extended mile under Zac Purton, who kept the son of Lookin At Lucky up to his work to prevail by a short head over the reopposing Outgate.

Shum then thrust Moments In Time into Group Three company in May’s Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2,400m), with his willing galloper sticking on for fourth after setting a ludicrous early pace.

Moments In Time took another step forward when he got his first taste of Group One action in the Champions & Chater Cup at the end of the month, edging up three points in the ratings to 98 for his three-and-a-quarter-length defeat in fourth.

“He’s in very good form,” Shum said. “There was not much for us to choose from, we have a Group Three over 1,800m [the Premier Plate on June 23] or we can choose Happy Valley. He’s gone well at Happy Valley so we went with that, and Zac Purton is on board.”

Moments In Time will jump from barrier eight in the HK$3.12 million contest, while Chill Chibi will have to negotiate gate 10 under regular rider Jerry Chau Chun-lok.

After collecting three dominant Happy Valley wins at the beginning of the season, Chill Chibi has been unable to get back in the winner’s enclosure from four starts.

The son of Wrote gave a good account to finish fourth in March’s Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) but was forced to miss the Queen Mother Memorial Cup last month due to lameness.

“He is good now and he performs at Happy Valley as well. Hopefully he can go well,” Shum said. “Helene Feeling is OK, but he’s had quite a tough couple of seasons so he’s nearly had enough I think.”

Helene Feeling has registered two wins at the city circuit this term and will reunite with Vincent Ho Chak-yiu.

Shum’s eight-strong team on Wednesday night includes last-start winner Satirical Fan, who shed the maiden tag on his fourth appearance under seven-pound claimer Wong.

He returns to Class Three level in the Chamomile Handicap (1,650m).

“He did it well last time and he will learn a lot in Class Three,” Shum said. “He might be able to close late.”
