David Hayes heads to Happy Valley on Wednesday night confident a pair of course specialists can help him continue his impressive run of form.

The two-time Hong Kong champion trainer moved to 44 winners for the campaign when Satirical Glory saluted at Sha Tin on Sunday and the 61-year-old handler has sent out seven winners in as many meetings as he eyes a strong finish to the season.

With four-time winner Tomodachi Kokoroe and the consistent Harmony N Blessed representing his stable in the Class Two Wiltshire Handicap (1,200m), Hayes will be hopeful he can take one step closer to his target of 50 winners.

“I’m hoping to break through 50 [wins] with 50 horses racing this year on average,” Hayes said. “I think if you get a win a horse that’s pretty good. Plus, we’re not far off third in the championship.”

While Pierre Ng Pang-chi (59 wins) and Francis Lui Kin-wai (56) look set to fight out this season’s trainers’ championship, there is fierce competition for third, with only four victories separating six handlers.

Ricky Yiu Poon-fai currently sits in the bronze medal position on 47 wins, with John Size hot on his heels on 45 five victories. Tony Cruz, Caspar Fownes and Hayes are level on 44 triumphs, while Danny Shum Chap-shing has collected 43.

Harmony N Blessed and Tomodachi Kokoroe have contributed six wins to Hayes’ tally and they have been blessed with favourable draws in Wednesday night’s feature, with the pair set to jump from gates one and two, respectively.

Tomodachi Kokoroe failed to fire in the Group Two Sprint Cup (1,200m) at Sha Tin last month but returns to his preferred course and distance on the back of a comfortable trial win at Conghua.

“His trial was really good and I think there’s more to give,” Hayes said. “Last start he got very upset and melted in the parade ring, so we’re waiting for the twilight meetings before we come back to Sha Tin. This is probably the last Happy Valley race he’s eligible for.”

The son of Written Tycoon has four wins and two runner-up finishes over the Happy Valley 1,200m this term and walked away with a tidy HK$675,000 bonus in February after he shared the DBS x Manulife Million Challenge spoils with Copartner Ambition.

Among his 11 rivals in the HK$2.84 million contest is stablemate Harmony N Blessed, who has the advantage of a plum draw under Andrea Atzeni on the C+3 course.

The seven-year-old recorded his seventh career win two starts back over the Happy Valley 1,200m before giving a good account of himself to finish second behind Majestic Knight over the minimum trip.

“Harmony N Blessed is a Happy Valley specialist and a warhorse, they both are really,” Hayes said.

“He’s good at 1,000m and 1,200m. He’s probably close to his mark but he always runs his race and gives you a good look. I’m hopeful for Wednesday.”

Hayes’ midweek team also features Falcon Court, who placed for the first time in his seven-race career last start and contests the second section of the Class Four Hereford Handicap (1,200m) under Atzeni.

Red Majesty, who lines up in the Class Three Selkirk Handicap (1,650m), completes the veteran handler’s team.
