This week is shaping up as a big one for trainer Manfred Man Ka-leung, with the highlight being Lucky Sweynesse’s pursuit of a fifth Group One success in Sunday’s Centenary Sprint Cup (1,200m) at Sha Tin.

It was in this race last year that Lucky Sweynesse broke through at the highest level, beating Wellington by a length and a half, and his latest win in the Group One Hong Kong Sprint (1,200m) last month suggests he’ll again prove hard to beat.

Man may well be searching for a boost in confidence ahead of Sunday’s race, however, and after sending out just four winners from 76 runners since Lucky Sweynesse saluted on international day, there is probably no trainer in the city happier that this Wednesday’s meeting takes place on the dirt.

The 66-year-old trainer has a 16 per cent strike rate on dirt this season, compared with 5 per cent on turf, and will be hoping to visit the winner’s enclosure with at least one of his seven runners.

Find My Love gallops on the dirt under Keith Yeung.

One of Man’s more interesting contenders is Find My Love, who switches to this surface for just the second time since arriving in Hong Kong in the Class Two Egret Handicap (1,650m).

Twice a winner over 1,400m on turf last season, Find My Love was well beaten over 1,650m on his only other attempt on dirt but a quick look at his sire’s track record suggests he is well worth another try.

The five-year-old is a son of northern hemisphere behemoth Frankel and his progeny who have raced in Hong Kong have shown an aptitude for the track.

While admittedly a small sample size, six of Frankel’s sons have competed on dirt in the city – Seven Heavens, Tangmere, Enjoyable Success, Last Kingdom, Well Dragon and Frantanck – with Seven Heavens and Last Kingdom picking up wins and Well Dragon the only runner not to achieve at least a place.

Elsewhere, Man will hold no fears over the suitability of the surface for Self Improvement, who takes in the Class Three Heron Handicap (1,650m).

The four-year-old has a win and three placed efforts from his five dirt starts but will need to bounce back from a couple of disappointing showings against some in-form runners such as recent winners Yellowfin, Adefill and Nordic Star.

Veteran Magic Supreme, who races in section one of the Class Four Kestrel Handicap (1,200m), has also provided Man with a win on this surface this season.

While Man has replaced apprentice Ellis Wong Chi-wang with Matthew Chadwick aboard Magic Supreme, he has engaged the 10-pound claimer to ride his other runner in the race, Jolly Companion, who makes his first start on the surface.

While Wong’s claim reduces the class-dropping Jolly Companion’s impost to 125 pounds, Magic Supreme must lug 134.

Sky Forever in section two of the Kestrel Handicap and Viva Hunter and Lucky Chevaliers, who both run in the Class Four Peacock Handicap (1,650m), round out Man’s representatives on the card.
