Karis Teetan took the riding honours at Sha Tin on Saturday, landing a fantastic four-timer to take his tally on the week to six winners.

Fatherhood seems to suit the Mauritian rider, who has won the Group One QE II Cup on Romantic Warrior and ridden a stack of winners since welcoming his daughter into the world last month, and he is understandably delighted with the way the last few weeks have panned out.

“Things have been going well,” Teetan said. “It’s all about momentum and getting the right support so I’d like to thank the owners, trainers and friends who have been supporting me throughout. I’m so grateful.

“I hope to pick up some more decent rides towards the end of the season. I don’t set a target, I Just try to ride as many winners as I can. It’s been going well and I just hope I can finish the season strongly.”

Teetan dominated the opening exchanges at Sha Tin, taking out the opening Class Three Celosia Handicap (1,200m) aboard Super Fortune and following up just an hour later with Good Luck Friend in the Class Two Carnation Handicap (1,400m).

Champion Griffin two seasons ago, Good Luck Friend had failed to hit any great heights since winning four of his six starts in his debut campaign and was restricted to just four runs last term after suffering a metacarpal bone injury in January 2021.

The five-year-old had showed glimmers of retaining his ability this season with three top-three finishes to his name, including when a decent runner-up behind Silver Express on his last start, and that effort clearly signposted a return to form.

Trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai was delighted that Good Luck Friend ended a lengthy losing run.

“He’s a very nice, very genuine type of horse,” Yiu said. “He hasn’t carried that low weight of 113 pounds for a long time so I encouraged the jockey to have him positive somewhere with the light weight.

“He’s not a difficult horse to ride and he’s straightforward. With the weight I thought he would perform and he needed 1,400m.”

Yiu is confident that Good Luck Friend will back up this win and is confident that he can continue to run well now he has regained the winning groove.

“We’ll see how the rating goes,” Yiu said. “Hopefully Karis will ride him again and with his rating of 85, if he goes up five he’ll be in the middle of Class Two and he will do it again. He’ll perform again as he’s a very honest horse.”

Teetan had earlier never seen another rival when steering Super Fortune to victory in the opener.

Sent off at $2, the favourite was quickly away from the gates and gamely held on to beat Eight Trigrams and leave trainer Tony Cruz just one win shy of 1,400 Hong Kong winners as a trainer.

Teetan completed his four-timer with two wins for trainer Frankie Lor Fu-chuen.

Looking Cool registered his first victory in Hong Kong at his fifth attempt when running on strongly to win the Class Three Daphne Handicap (1,600m).

A good second on his last start over 200m further, he relished the drop in trip to bravely hold off the strong late challenge of Copartner Elites.

Teetan rounded off his afternoon in some style by conjuring a strong late finish from Dragon Fortune to win the Class Three Chamomile Handicap (1,400m).

Those successes mean Lor maintains his two-win lead over John Size in the trainers’ championship with the Sha Tin Saturday scoreline between the pair finishing 2-2.
