The Me Tsui Yu-sak-trained Dazzle Winner did not bring much prior form to Happy Valley on Wednesday night but he left the track with his name in plenty of black books.

Despite not looking hopeless in one or two early trials, Dazzle Winner was completely outrun in his first six starts, beating home a total of seven rivals but five of those in his first race.

Tsui only tried him at distances as far as 1,400m, but his breeding certainly indicated that he would be needing further than that if he was to show up somewhere.

When he resumed this season, at the New Year’s Day meeting, Tsui stepped him up to 1,600m in his first look at Class Five company, and it might have been expected he could do a little better but still the result was the same.

Dazzle Winner followed the field around that day but there were indications at the barrier trials between then and Wednesday night that improvement was imminent.

He was finding the line well at the end of a trial on March 6 and Tsui decided it was time to get back to the track.

Wednesday night’s race saw pressure applied to the leaders from the top turn coming out of the back straight and that allowed horses to run on late in the piece and Dazzle Winner was among them.

He didn’t do anything all that quickly but the gelding kept getting to the line in the final 100m and was only a length and a half from Golden Kid in third placing on the line.

By a Breeders’ Cup Mile winner, Artie Schiller, Dazzle Winner is out of a mare by Blevic, a 2,500m Victoria Derby winner in Australia, so a mile is probably the least distance over which this four-year-old might be effective and he races that way.

He doesn’t look to have much speed, even as his distances have got longer, but he will run out 1,800m or even 2,200m so look for him over those sorts of trips now that he is starting to put it all together.
