Peter Ho Leung-trained Mr Right is in a golden patch of form and gets another great opportunity to advance his record and land some silverware when he tackles the Police Cup (1,000m) at Happy Valley tonight.

Mr Right (Joao Moreira) has won three of his last six starts, all at tonight’s course, and has also run two close seconds as well, behind a subsequent winner in Back In Black and behind the hugely promising Mr Stunning.

Form doesn’t get better than that, he has the top jockey and Mr Right finds himself opposed to a field of horses best described as proven (read ‘well explored’) or aspirational (read ‘yet to get their act together’).

He faced an issue last time from gate 10, whether to do some work to get across, or steady behind and look to run on, but Moreira made the decision with ruthless precision leaving the gates.

The Brazilian used the four-year-old’s natural pace and light weight, planted Mr Right straight outside the lead and never really looked like losing, even though his margin was cut back to half a length on the line.

He rises 12 pounds in the weights now, so Moreira will be less inclined to make him work early, but, on the plus side, he comes into gate seven and has the two fastest horses on his inside, Top Bonus (Matthew Chadwick) and Brilliant Proposal and they might clear a path across for him.

John Moore sends out interesting newcomer Bad Boy (Derek Leung Ka-chun), although it’s notable that Moreira trialled him and has preferred Mr Right.

A winner of two from three in South Australia, Bad Boy is a three-year-old conceding weight to fit and more experienced rivals at his local debut.

He has got to the races quite quickly – his most recent Australian run was on October 31 and his work only seems to have got going here in early January – and that can be a blessing or a curse. Still, Moore has found a cup race for him and applied blinkers for his first attempt so he looks a contender from a good draw.
