It is hard to go past Joao Moreira as the likely winner of the Jockey Challenge at Sha Tin, even if his odds-on quote doesn't look the greatest value bet.
Moreira is the only rider with a full book of 10 rides, and on what could easily be a wide open day, the Magic Man was installed $1.80 early favourite before firming into $1.60 last night.
Each one of Moreira's rides were single figures in early betting, although the rider himself is having plenty of influence on odds at the moment and it seems some of his mounts are starting well under their "true" price.
Prince of Sunshine opens the day for Moreira in an open Class Five handicap, followed by rides on Whistle Blower, Hello Kimberley, Verdane, Dining Star, Telecom Prince, Dehere's The Love, Bundle Of Love, Principal and Flame Hero.
If fishing for an upset it is hard to know where it will come from, but it should be noted that Moreira's day finishes much better than the beginning and those placing a bet on an outsider should be mindful of the strong back half of the program for the Brazilian.
Tye Angland could be one for those looking for double figure odds. The Australian was $16 last night, and his rides include leading chances Lucky Bonus, Silly Buddies and Smart Volatility.
His compatriot Zac Purton was a clear second pick in betting, and while he only has seven rides, two of them look excellent winning chances. Celestial Smile and Numero Uno should go close, but still, the $6.50 about Purton looks unappealing given the lack of depth in his book of rides.
