Motorola was a trailblazer in the mobile phone market, pioneering both the flip phone and the clam phone, but lost market share in the face of tough competition from smartphones, particularly after the launch of Apple’s iPhone. Its handset division, Motorola Mobility, was hived off in 2011 and sold to Google the following year, and now focuses on products using Google’s open-source Android operating system.
