Race Ten: (670)-LOTUS HANDICAP - Class 2 - 1600Metres
From a wide barrier, KEEN VENTURE was steadied and shifted across behind runners soon after the start.BULLISH GLORY began awkwardly and shifted out, crowding DYNAMISM onto LUCKY GIRL which became unbalanced.
Then, despite being hard ridden, LUCKY GIRLY failed to muster speed.
Approaching the 1400 Metres, LUCKY GIRL had to be steadied and lost ground when crowded for room between SEASONS BLOOM which shifted in slightly when awkwardly placed inside the heels of BLOOMING DELIGHT and DOYENI which, after being brushed on the hindquarters by LUCKY GIRL, was inclined to lay out.
Approaching and passing the 500 Metres, DOYENI lost ground after being awkwardly placed outside the heels of RODRICO.
BEAUTY WAY was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight.
After being disappointed for running between BEAUTY WAY and RODRICO approaching the 200 Metres, GONNA RUN was directed back to the inside of the heels of BEAUTY WAY to continue improving.
Over the concluding stages, SEASONS BLOOM was inclined to lay in under pressure and close to the winning post was awkwardly placed inside the heels of KEEN VENTURE.
When questioned, K Teetan stated that due to the manner in which the track was racing today, with runners on the pace seemingly advantaged, he was asked to ride NASSA in a more forward position.
He said in accordance with his instructions he pressed forward on NASSA in the early stages and at the 1200 Metres felt that the rider of BOOMING DELIGHT was positioning his mount to take up a position near the rail which would have afforded NASSA a trailing position behind EASTERN EXPRESS.
He said however that BOOMING DELIGHT then maintained its position behind EASTERN EXPRESS which left NASSA racing wide and without cover.
He added, despite enduring a hard run three wide, NASSA was able to sustain its run in the Straight and had finished off the race well.
When questioned regarding the performance of EASTERN EXPRESS, J Moreira stated that, from a wide barrier, he rode EASTERN EXPRESS positively in the early stages and was able to assume a position one horse off the rail outside of BEAUTY WAY.
He said the pace during the early and middle stages was quite strong and combined with carrying top weight, this, in his view, was the reason that EASTERN EXPRESS was not able to finish off its race in the Straight.
A veterinary inspection of EASTERN EXPRESS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of LUCKY GIRL immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.
The Stewards opened an inquiry into Apprentice K K Chiong's riding of DOYENI in the Straight.
After taking evidence from Apprentice Chiong, the inquiry was adjourned until a date to be fixed to allow Mr K W Lui, the allocated trainer of Apprentice Chiong, to be present.
KEEN VENTURE and BOOMING DELIGHT were sent for sampling.
GENERAL:
1.
Trainer A S Cruz was fined the sum of $5,000 for breaching Stewards' Instruction 32 in that his stable strength has exceeded the allowable number since 16 May 2017.

Addition to Racing Incidents Report of 17 May 2017 Happy Valley Racemeeting - Race 5 (657) Soon after entering the Back Straight near the 900 Metres, LOADED had to be steadied when momentarily crowded for room inside WONDERFUL TIGER which got its head on the side and lay in away from PEACE N PROSPERITY.

Additional Veterinary Reports from Happy Valley Racemeeting on 17 May 2017 Subsequent official veterinary inspections (without endoscopy) of GRACE HEART, OCEAN ROAR, WEALTHY FORTUNE, AUDACITY, VICTORY BOYS, HIGH VOLATILITY, CALL ME AWESOME, AGIAAL, IRON BOY, BREEDERS' STAR, PEACE N PROSPERITY, BUMBLE BABY, LOVE CHUNGHWA, STARLIGHT, SUPER TURBO, BLOCKER DEE, BEST STEP and WONDERFUL JOURNEY revealed no apparent abnormality.

Racing Laboratory tests of RUGBY DIAMOND, FOREVER FUN, DOUBLE MASTER, PRINCE HARMONY, SMART SALUTE, RESPLENDENT GLORY, TORNEY, HAPPY LIFE, JADE FORTUNE, CONTRIBUTION, GREAT JOY, FORMULA GALORE, POWERMAX, TRUMP, FRIENDS OF KA YING, PACKING DRAGON, BIG BANG BONG, HEALTHY LUCK, FANTASTIC FEELING and AMAZING (10.5.17) proved negative.

Keen Venture came on nicely down the outside after settling second from the rear to mow down Booming Delight 20m out for an overdue win after seconds in two of six other starts. He's the only one to come from well back to win on the card but the good pace off a light weight did help. Booming Delight ran well in defeat after assuming the lead 150m out following a prominent run. He quite versatile and it's only a matter of time before he wins another. Well-punted late, Jolly Jolly was hustled to lead from gate 14 and wouldn't go down without a fight. He keeps running big races in defeat at this level and will be winning one shortly. Doyeni took some time to wind up after getting into the open 200m out travelling worse than midfield but finished well to snatch fourth on the wire. He's crying out for a longer trip. Nassa was ridden closer in the run travelling fore of midfield and stayed on well to just miss placings. He's made a good impression in his four starts but appears to want a further trip. Seasons Bloom peaked on his late burst 100m out.
