He’s seeing them as well as he has in a long time and Jerry Chau Chun-lok is eager to strike while the iron is hot at Sha Tin this Sunday before beginning the first of three upcoming suspensions.
With six winners across the past three meetings, Chau snared more than half of his 10 winners for the season in the space of nine days and could not be happier with how things are going.
“The past three meetings have gone really well and I just need to keep working hard and hope the luck comes,” said the jockey.
“Before this little patch I had some nice horses with chances but they often got bad draws, which made things hard. Now, though, things seem to be going well.”
Threatening to halt Chau’s momentum are three separate two-meeting careless riding suspensions – two of which he was hit with while reeling off a Sha Tin treble last weekend – but the 24-year-old has spread them out across January and February in a bid to lessen their impact.
“I’ve just tried to separate them so I can keep getting the better rides, have a little bit of time off then chase the rides again. I can’t just stop for six meetings – all the horses will be gone,” said Chau, who will miss the meetings on January 1 and 5.
“I’ll be trying to be more careful going forward – I think that’s all I need to worry about.”
Chau believes he has a couple of winning chances among his six Sha Tin rides on Sunday, with Newborn Miracle chasing a breakthrough victory at start three in the Class Four Ho Chung Handicap (1,200m) after a fourth and second to begin his career.

“Newborn Miracle is in good form and luckily he’s got a good draw again,” said Chau of Ricky Yiu Poon-fai’s four-year-old, who was a narrow second behind all-the-way winner Triumphant More last start.
“Last time he just got beaten by the pace. The pace was too slow and Zac [Purton] just controlled the race. But he’s doing well – his last sectional was [22.05 seconds], which is very fast, and I think he will keep improving and hopefully this time he can get the job done.”
While Newborn Miracle has gate three, Multidarling must overcome stall 12 in the Class Five Turtle Cove Handicap (1,400m).
“Multidarling needs a perfect race with a good pace and a smooth run, but I think the draw suits him if he can just jump and take his time. If he can be midfield, he can finish well,” said Chau.
