Andrea Atzeni is hitting peak form in time for a busy festive period and the 33-year-old hopes he can continue his momentum courtesy of a strong book of rides at Sha Tin on Sunday.

After a steady start to the season, Atzeni has collected six wins in the past six meetings to take his strike rate for the campaign to 8.4 per cent – marginally higher than his win rate of 8.1 per cent last term.

While the jockey had to sit out Wednesday’s all-weather card due to suspension, he is optimistic he has plenty of live chances to return to the winners’ enclosure from his 10 rides on Sunday, including the David Eustace-trained Glorious Success, who jumps from the inside gate in the Class Three Spruce Handicap (1,400m).

“It’s picking up now,” Atzeni said. “I’ve ridden a couple of doubles or a winner at the last four or five meetings. Things are going well, so hopefully we’ll keep it going.

Jockey Andrea Atzeni celebrates a win with connections at Sha Tin.

“Glorious Success ran very well first up. He’s got a good draw again, he’s improved since his first start and he could have a good chance on Sunday. I think it’s quite a nice race, to be fair.”

Glorious Success gave a good account of himself on his Hong Kong debut as a $22 chance under Atzeni last month, with the five-year-old son of Star Witness doing his best work in the closing stages to finish second to Danny Shum Chap-shing’s Charming Legend.

He will look to go one better in a strong Class Three contest that includes Classic Mile hopeful Johannes Brahms, the consistent Beauty Crescent and three-time winner Lucy In The Sky.

Atzeni will also be looking to convert I Give’s latest placing into a win, with Pierre Ng Pang-chi’s six-year-old jumping from barrier seven in the red-hot Class Two Poinsettia Handicap (1,200m).

I Give, who relentlessly galloped his way to five wins on the bounce last term, kept on willingly over the Sha Tin 1,000m to fill the runner-up spot under James McDonald last weekend. He drops nine pounds to carry 117 with Atzeni in the saddle.

“He’s a solid horse and he ran very well down the straight the other day,” Atzeni said. “He’s up to 1,200m, which is his ideal distance really, and he’s carrying a light weight.

“It’s quite a hot race, obviously Wunderbar is in it, Call Me Glorious, Bottomuptogether and Fast Network. But he always gives his all.”

Atzeni steered Happy Park to his first success from gate one on December 8 and hopes the Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained youngster can go close once again in the second section of the Class Four Hibiscus Handicap (1,200m).

“I think he’s an improving horse. He won his last race and the handicapper put him up six pounds. He’s a horse that every time he runs, he improves, and he should be competitive again with a nice draw,” said the jockey.

Of his remaining rides, Atzeni highlighted Bear Champ as a horse with a bright future despite only finishing sixth on his two career starts.

The three-year-old will have to defy a wide berth in barrier 11 in the Class Four Erica Handicap (1,400m) for three-year-olds.

“I think stepping out to 1,400m will suit him and it looks like all the fancied horses have drawn out,” Atzeni said. “I like him and he’ll be a nice horse for the future.”
