Brenton Avdulla is no stranger to tasting feature-race success and the Australian rider could be set for a big weekend at Sha Tin, with a trio of live chances in Sunday’s Group Two contests.

Hopping aboard three-time Group One winner California Spangle in the Group Two BOCHK Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint (1,200m), Straight Arron in the Group Two BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile and Five G Patch in the Group Two BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2,000m), Avdulla will look to increase his win tally for the season, which currently stands at seven.

While California Spangle was no match for Ka Ying Rising last time out in the Group Two Premier Bowl (1,200m), Avdulla is confident the Tony Cruz-trained sprinter has taken a step forward from his third on seasonal reappearance.

“I’ve been happy with him,” Avdulla said. “First up we had to use him to hold the draw and he sort of got attacked by Ka Ying Rising’s stablemate [Harmony N Blessed] which softened him up a bit.

“I think he’s taken good improvement, he’s trialled well in between and he doesn’t have the stablemate of Ka Ying Rising [to deal with], although he does have Victor The Winner drawn inside which could be an issue.

“He’s a high-speed horse and he’ll be rolling on the pace whether he’s in front or outside one, so we’ll see how we go.”

Straight Arron hit the line with plenty of conviction under Avdulla on his first outing for Ricky Yiu Poon-fai in the Group Two Sha Tin Trophy (1,600m) and bids to topple Pierre Ng Pang-chi’s emerging star, Galaxy Patch.

“The horse is going well and Ricky’s got him going great,” Avdulla said. “He attacked the line well and wasn’t beaten far by some handy horses.”

Straight Arron (right) runs on for fourth in the Group Two Sha Tin Trophy.

“I’m looking forward to it and I thought Five G Patch ran really well too [in the Group Three Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (1,800m)].

“If Romantic Warrior is anywhere near his best, he’s going to be very hard to beat, but I think Five G Patch is in really good order and I’ve got no doubt he can run really well.”
