Connections have high hopes for a couple of impressive winners after Sunlight Power and Magic Control blazed to victory at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Ricky Yiu Poon-fai is not often one for overstatement when it comes to discussing the future of his horses, but the veteran could not hide his excitement after Sunlight Power flew to a decisive two-length win in the Class Three Yiu Tung Handicap (1,400m).
“I wish I could tell you how good he can be, but I’m aiming high,” Yiu said of the 74-rated gelding.
“I think he can get to over 100 [in the ratings], but I can’t tell you how high he can go because he keeps on improving.”

A three-time winner from 14 starts heading into Sunday’s race, Sunlight Power lined up a warm favourite for his first-up assignment and proceeded to brush aside his 13 rivals with a minimum of fuss.
After he settled three wide and towards the rear in the early stages under Jerry Chau Chun-lok, the five-year-old made smooth headway around the home turn and unleashed a powerful turn of foot to take the lead 150m from home.
He stretched clear of his opponents in the closing stages to record a comfortable success, with the son of Capitalist covering the final 400m in 22.27 seconds – around five lengths quicker than standard time.
The gelding’s win was a second success at Class Three level in the space of four days for two-pound claimer Chau, who crossed the line easing his mount down and up in his irons.
Another Class Three winner also lit up the turf on the 10-race card, with Magic Control – who was a Group Three victor in Australia – notching his first win in the city in impressive style.
While Magic Control failed to get off the mark on his sole start for Jamie Richards last season, the gelding blazed a trail on his stable debut for Cody Mo Wai-kit to land the Lok Wah Handicap (1,000m) by a cosy length.
“It’s nice to achieve the first winner of the season and this is a great horse to get it with,” Mo said. “You could see from his win overseas that he’s a very good horse.”
The son of Sioux Nation showed sharp early speed to lead after 200m and kept on well under a hands-and-heels ride from Matthew Chadwick. The speedster covered the final 400m over six lengths inside standard time.

Magic Control collected three wins from six outings under the name of Archo Nacho in Australia, headlined by his victory in the Group Three Anchor Stakes (1,200m) at Moonee Valley in October last year.
He also showed plenty of promise in his recent trial down the Sha Tin straight, beating home subsequent Class One HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup (1,200m) winner Ka Ying Rising.
“In his latest trial he went very easily with Ka Ying Rising, who is a Group winner,” Mo said. “He just followed him nicely without too much pressure and kept going.
“I’m very pleased and I’ll have to see the programme, but he’ll be up in class next race and he’ll run over 1,200m for sure. Hopefully he can keep going.”
