Master trainer Aidan O’Brien is confident Opera Singer will relish her first test at 1,984m when she chases a second Group One victory in Thursday’s Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.

A brilliant winner of the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac (1,600m) at Longchamp last October, Opera Singer is on the verge of another elite-level triumph after she was placed in her past two starts.

The daughter of Justify returned from her career-best victory with a third in the Group One Irish 1,000 Guineas (1,600m), before running a solid second to Porta Fortuna in the Group One Coronation Stakes (1,600m) at Ascot last start.

She loomed as the winner in her most recent appearance, only to be run down late to be beaten a length.

Despite being restricted to a mile or shorter in her seven-start career, Opera Singer boasts staying potential in the eyes of champion handler O’Brien.

“She has an incredible pedigree and is by Justify which just makes her extra special.” O’Brien said.

“We think she’ll be happy with the trip and track and she can probably go even further, too.

“We were delighted with her at Ascot. We were always going to step up to go to 2,000 in the Nassau Stakes with her after that. We’re very happy with her and everything has gone well since Ascot.”

Ryan Moore will again ride Opera Singer, whose nine rivals in the fillies and mares’ feature are headlined by dual Group One winner Emily Upjohn.

Supplemented into the Nassau Stakes by trainers John and Thady Gosden, Emily Upjohn hasn’t won since last year’s Group One Coronation Cup (2,000m) at Epsom against males but is in top form.

The Sea The Stars mare led by more than three lengths with a furlong to go in the Group One Pretty Polly Stakes (1,800m) in Ireland last start, but could not hold off Bluestocking’s finishing burst when running second.

Bluestocking boosted that form when running second to Goliath in the Group One King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2,400m) at Ascot last weekend.

“The form’s been backed up which is great to see,” Emily Upjohn’s rider Kieran Shoemark told Sky Sports Racing.

“I look forward to riding her on some nice, quick ground on Thursday. She’s a top-class mare and I think the mile-and-a-quarter really suits her.”

Progressive French filly Sparkling Plenty also has claims in pursuit of a hat-trick. She won the Group Two Prix de Sandringham (1,600m) and Group One Prix de Diane (2,100m) at her past two starts.

The Nassau Stakes is the highlight of Thursday’s eight-race Goodwood card, which will be simulcast by the Jockey Club. The first race jumps at 8.50pm Hong Kong time.

Vincent Ho continues his summer riding stint at Goodwood on Thursday.

Hong Kong’s top home-grown jockey Vincent Ho Chak-yiu has two rides on the third day of Glorious Goodwood - Brioni in the opening race and Veydari in race five.

O’Brien looks well placed to strike in the Group Three Gordon Stakes (2,403m), with exciting colt Jan Brueghel expected to extend his unblemished record at start three.

The son of Galileo bolted in by eight lengths on debut before a narrow victory in the Group Three International Stakes (2,000m) last start.

“We always thought he was going to stay and could stay further,” O’Brien said.

“We’re very happy with him. He’s a very relaxed and laid-back horse who has had two lovely runs this year. We thought this would fit into his programme well.”
