Majestic Knight and Zoom Boom capped their consistent campaigns with impressive wins to deliver Douglas Whyte a late-season double at Happy Valley on Thursday night.

Hugh Bowman landed the first leg of his own brace with a rail-hugging ride on Majestic Knight in the Class Two Briar Handicap (1,000m), before Harry Bentley followed suit with an inside run to lift Zoom Boom to victory in the Class Three Cheong Ming Handicap (1,650m).

Hong Kong’s most successful jockey, Whyte boosted his tally of wins to 38 in a season which also featured him surpassing the training milestone of 200 victories.

Overcoming top weight of 135 pounds, Majestic Knight stormed home from second last in the field of seven to overhaul Whizz Kid and Beauty Waves in a close finish.

“He’s been a model of consistency and over this trip, he seems to enjoy it,” Whyte said.

“The pace seems to be too quick for him and he just gets stronger and stronger as the race develops in the latter stages.

“Hugh gave him a brilliant ride – from a wide gate he hugged the rail, he saved all the ground and he got the splits. It helped him carry the weight and that was the difference in the end.”

Majestic Knight bounced back from an unlucky 11th over 1,200m at Happy Valley when wide throughout at his previous start to notch his fourth win this term.

“I decided to freshen him up and give him a break and his trial 10 days ago was very good in Conghua,” Whyte said.

Hugh Bowman boots home Majestic Knight.

“He’s creeping up in the ratings now, but as I said, he’s a model of consistency.”

Zoom Boom continued his remarkable comeback from injury with a third win this season when he ran on from fourth to beat Star Contact by three quarters of a length.

Struck down by a tendon injury in 2022, the former British galloper was off the scene for almost a year and a half.

“He’s really come a long way from a horse that had an injury and looked in trouble, to the most consistent horse for my stable this season,” Whyte said.

He said the horse “probably should have won another race with a bit of luck. But tonight he had the draw [barrier one], he had all favours and carried out a very good race. He’s very consistent and very tactical, which makes it easier for a jockey and myself.”

Bowman was also successful on the John Size-trained Grand Nova in the Class Four Hawthorn Handicap (1,000m).

Elsewhere, Luke Ferraris and Ricky Yiu Poon-fai combined to score a double with Little Fairy in the Class Five Tsun Yuen Handicap (1,650m) and Watch Buddy in the Class Three Broom Handicap (1,200m).

“It’s great to ride another winner for Ricky. I think we’ve got a pretty good strike rate together and hopefully the winners can keep coming,” Ferraris said.

Brenton Avdulla ended a winless streak of 55 rides when he guided David Hall’s Northern Beast to victory in the Class Four Min Fat Handicap (1,650m).

Meanwhile, Benno Yung Tin-pang has been given the green light to continue his career after the Jockey Club’s licensing committee granted him a trainer’s license for next season.

The committee made the call at a meeting on Wednesday after stating last month that Yung’s application was “under further consideration”, as the 65-year-old battled ongoing health issues.
