Copartner Prance surged to a remarkable sixth straight win at Happy Valley on Wednesday night to help Francis Lui Kin-wai land another blow in a pulsating trainers’ championship battle.

The first horse to claim six consecutive victories since Lucky Sweynesse last year, Copartner Prance sealed a race-to-race double for Lui, who responded to premiership rival Pierre Ng Pang-chi’s Sha Tin treble last Sunday.

Lui and Ng once again share the title lead, with both handlers on 65 wins with only five meetings left this season.

Capping a treble for champion jockey Zac Purton, Copartner Prance continued his rapid emergence with victory in the Class Two Tan Shan River Handicap (1,200m).

“Of course, it is hard to win six in a row,” Lui said.

“He keeps improving. There’s a 1,200m race at Sha Tin towards the end of the season, but we’ll see how he recovers after the race and leave it to Zac.”

In a race that changed complexion when speedster Superb Capitalist bombed the start, Copartner Prance settled second and overhauled pacesetter Harmony N Blessed late to beat that galloper by three quarters of a length.

“What a tenacious horse he’s turned into, he’s come a long way in a short period of time,” Purton said.

Trainer Francis Lui (second from left), jockey Zac Purton and connections celebrate Copartner Prance’s latest Happy Valley win.

“He just seems to be getting a little bit better all of the time, which is what you hope they do when they mature and develop.

“He feels like he’s got a little bit more there so next season after he’s had a bit of a break, he can take another step.”

Packing Hermod gave Lui and Purton the first leg of a race-to-race double, producing a brilliant debut to win the first section of the Class Four Ng Tung River Handicap (1,200m) by two and a half lengths.

“He’s a good horse but he’s still a three-year-old,” Lui said.

“I hope he can be a Classic [Series] horse and I hope in the off-season he can grow up. He still has a lot of room to improve and grow.”

Purton also booted home Danny Shum Chap-shing’s Comet Splendido in the first section of the Class Four Beas River Handicap (1,650m).

The champion jockey had to settle for second on Go Go Go in the opening race in his 10,000th Hong Kong ride.

Karis Teetan spoiled the party on Me Tsui Yu-sak’s Arthur’s Kingdom and he joined Purton with a treble, also winning on Cody Mo Wai-kit’s Chain Of Gold and the David Hall-trained Kyrus Dragon.

Elsewhere, Mark Newnham and Luke Ferraris also combined for a race-to-race double with One For All and Setanta.

Ferraris bounced One For All straight to the front in the second section of the Ng Tung River Handicap and he stayed on strongly to beat the $2 favourite, Lean Master, by three quarters of a length.

It was the No Nay Never five-year-old’s first victory for Newnham after notching three in a row at the Valley last year for Richard Gibson.

“It’s taken him all season, but he had a minor throat surgery after his first couple of starts and now he’s had three runs back to get fit,” Newnham said.

Trainer Mark Newnham and jockey Luke Ferraris are all smiles after teaming up for a double.

“Luke rode him really well – he won the race at the start when he outjumped the favourite and when he found the fence, he was always going to be hard to beat.”

Setanta relished a strong speed in the Class Four Pearce Memorial Challenge Cup (1,650m) to swoop from second last, overhauling I Can by a length and a half.

Ferraris was grateful for Newnham’s support after the South African rider booted home his first double since October.

“Mark has been fantastic to me. He’s really supported me solidly throughout the season and, as I’ve touched on before, it’s always nice to repay him with a winner – long may it continue,” Ferraris said.

The brace lifted Newnham’s tally in his first Hong Kong season to 28 wins.

“We’re going well. We’ve had a good second half. I think this is the fourth meeting in a row we’ve had a winner, so if we can keep that up until the end of the season, I’ll be very happy,” the Australian handler said.
