The Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2,005m) highlights day two of Royal Ascot on Wednesday and it’s Horizon Dore who may catch the eye of Hong Kong punters.

One of the many gallopers put to the sword by Romantic Warrior this season, Horizon Dore failed to fire a shot when six lengths behind the local hero in 10th in December’s Group One Hong Kong Cup (2,000m).

The Patrice Cottier-trained four-year-old’s form has been largely better since, however, culminating in an agonising last-start second behind Mqse De Sevigne in last month’s Group One Prix d’Ispahan (1,850m) at Longchamp.

As well as the prospect of good-to-firm going, third favourite Horizon Dore’s biggest hurdles on Wednesday come in the form of enigmatic favourite Auguste Rodin and second elect Inspiral.

Inspiral, who was favourite for Tuesday’s Group One Queen Anne Stakes (1,600m) until her withdrawal, has only once raced at 2,000m, winning the Group One Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita last November for John and Thady Gosden.

“We learnt last year in California that she needed every yard of 2,000m. We’ve been looking forward to stepping her up in trip again after her comeback race over 1,600m at Newbury last month,” Chris Richardson, representing Inspiral’s owner Cheveley Park Stud, said of the mare’s fourth in last month’s Group One Lockinge Stakes (1,600m).

“She was slowly away that day and in need of the run and shaped as if she needs a bit further these days. That’s what the Gosdens have been saying. Hopefully this will open up many more avenues going forward.”

In a glittering career, the five-year-old has won a total of six Group One races across Britain, France and the USA. Her victory at Santa Anita came on firm ground and her many fans will hope that she appreciates the extra distance.

Auguste Rodin, who boasts five Group One victories, including the English and Irish Derbies and Breeders’ Cup Turf over 2,400m, won the Group One Irish Champion Stakes (2,000m) last September but also has a question to answer.

The four-year-old finished last in the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic (2,410m) in March and was then beaten by White Birch in the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup (2,100m) at the Curragh last month.

After that race, O’Brien said: “He ran a very good race. We knew the [good-to-yielding] ground wasn’t going to be ideal, but he’s on the way back. He’ll be fine.”

The Prince Of Wales’s Stakes is the fourth of seven races being offered for betting by the Jockey Club through the World Pool on day two of Royal Ascot, with the card’s first contest, the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes (1,000m), jumping at 9.30pm Hong Kong time.
