He’s the lowest-rated runner in the field and has never won a race at Sha Tin, but jockey Lyle Hewitson is confident Moments In Time can make his presence felt in Sunday’s Group One Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m).

While Moments In Time has an international rating a full 20 points below that of Charlie Appleby’s star raider Rebel’s Romance and a local mark of only 95, the four-year-old impressed Hewitson when sticking on for fourth after setting a ludicrous pace in the recent Group Three Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2,400m).

“I’m looking forward to it. Firstly, we don’t have a lot of races over this trip in Hong Kong so the ratings are unexposed a bit,” Hewitson said ahead of his first ride aboard Moments In Time.

“Last time, although he had the light weight, it’s really hard to go those sectionals and still finish where he did. He ran full of credit there.”

The Danny Shum Chap-shing-trained Moments In Time boasts similarities to 2021 Champions & Chater Cup winner Panfield, with both sons of Lookin At Lucky winning Chile’s Group One Nacional Ricardo Lyon (2,000m) as three-year-olds pre-import.

Like Panfield, Moments In Time also crossed the line in first in the Group One El Ensayo Mega (2,400m) but he was later disqualified after returning a banned substance.

“Even though he’s way out of it at the ratings this time, I think considering what he managed to do last time still gives him a bit of a chance considering there should be a bit less pressure. I’m really happy to be aboard him and we’ll see what he can do,” Hewitson said.

Hewitson heads into the week in winning form after saluting aboard Full Credit for Mark Newnham at Sha Tin on Sunday and the pair join forces again at Happy Valley on Wednesday night with last-start runner-up Happy Hero in the Class Five Chester Handicap (2,200m).

Moments In Time (outside) salutes at Happy Valley in April.

“He stays well and he’s solid in Class Five. He does need the race shape to suit him but if it does, he threatens. He’s got a fair draw and hopefully he just gets a nice trip lobbing in midfield and I’m sure he’ll be on top of them late,” said Hewitson, who also partners another galloper who beat all but one home last start in So Awesome.

“Gate 10 doesn’t help So Awesome but he’s a bottom of Class Four type of horse. He’s not necessarily progressive but he’s very honest.

“If he just keeps that form he’s been running lately and gets a bit of luck from the draw, hopefully he can be competitive again.”

Hewitson takes six rides to the midweek meeting as he looks to build on the 33 winners he has managed through the first 73 of the season’s 88 meetings.

After finishing fifth in the premiership last campaign with an even 50 wins, Hewitson finds himself in seventh spot this term.

“It was always going to be hard to surpass last season but I definitely wanted to have done a little bit better,” he said.

“But on the positive side, support-wise it’s been amazing that I’ve been able to get pretty much every trainer to give me opportunities throughout the season, so it bodes well going forward into next season.”
