Like Aston Villa captain John McGinn, Pierre Ng Pang-chi refuses to buy into title talk. But whereas one can understand McGinn’s public stance because his third-ranked team is $12 to win the Premier League for the first time, Ng would be a much shorter price to win his maiden trainers’ championship if the Jockey Club’s betting operation could offer such an option.

When Jumbo Fortune passed the Sha Tin winning post first in Sunday’s sixth race, it extended Ng’s run of consecutive meetings with at least one victory to 13.

It’s unclear if Ng’s baker’s dozen is a Hong Kong record. There is a school of thought Francis Lui Kin-wai’s 12 from June 28 to September 24 inclusive this year was the previous longest sequence, but verifying such information is a racing statistician’s nightmare.

What’s clear, however, is second-season handler Ng, who saddled three weekend winners – Jumbo Fortune, Aestheticism and Mugen – is enjoying a remarkable sophomore term, and the best may be yet to come.

Ng’s Sunday treble improved his season win tally to 35 – 13 more than his closest challenger, Danny Shum Chap-shing, and only six fewer than the 40-year-old trainer accrued in his impressive rookie campaign.

Twenty-two Ng-prepared gallopers have won races this term, which means the second-generation handler – his father, Peter Ng Bik-kuen, trained in Hong Kong from 1983 to 2013 – has the same number of individual winners as Shum has total winners. Incredible.

Dig deeper, and Ng’s numbers are even more stunning. For example, according to the starting prices of Ng’s 193 starters this season, with adjustments to account for the Jockey Club’s rake, the former assistant of Paul O’Sullivan, John Size and Lui should have won about 24 of the contests in which he’s had runners.

Last term, Ng outperformed one of the world’s sharpest betting markets by approximately one race win, or to use racing parlance, a nose. This term, he’s beating it by the length of the Happy Valley straight, and that’s despite being a handler whose gallopers often attract substantial late wagering support.

For instance, this season, the win odds of nine Ng-trained starters have halved inside the final 10 minutes of betting, with three of them – Fortune Warrior ($7.00 from $17.65) on November 8, Drombeg Banner ($6.85 from $19.35) on November 26 and Healthy Healthy ($5.75 from $16.35) on December 6 – rewarding their supporters. The difference between Ng’s actual victories and expected victories would be even bigger if he weren’t so popular with punters.

That’s enough about the past. What about the present and the future? Well, Ng holds entries in seven of Wednesday night’s eight events at Happy Valley, with Turin Mascot, Drombeg Banner and Healthy Healthy probably his best chances of visiting the winner’s enclosure for a 14th meeting in a row. Ng’s immediate prospects are good, and his next few months could be great.

Browse Ng’s page on the Jockey Club’s website, and you’ll find the ex-trackwork rider’s stable is overflowing with untapped gallopers, some of whom could make their presences felt in this term’s Classic Series races – the Hong Kong Classic Mile on February 4, the Hong Kong Classic Cup (1,800m) on March 3 and the Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) on March 24.

Ng had a glint in his eye as he spoke about Class Four winner Aestheticism to the media on Sunday – obviously, Ng thinks the son of Derryn could feature in the Classic Series contests if he can get his rating up to the levels required to make the respective fields – and then there are the likes of expensive private purchases Ka Ying Generation, Equatorial, Sunny Darling, Tradition, Bonus Pal, Excel Wongchoy, Robot Master and Sea Air Legend, none of whom has run in Hong Kong so far.

The distances of the Classic Series races may not be ideal for Galaxy Patch – his pedigree is more that of a sprinter than a miler – but the Wandjina gelding has smashed the clock in all three of his Sha Tin 1,200m successes since arriving from Australia. He looks like a Group winner waiting to happen and could usurp Super Wealthy and Duke Wai as the premier speedster in Ng’s yard before too long.

On Sunday, Ng said he wouldn’t start looking at this season’s title until the completion of 60 meetings. If there are no further changes to the programme, this season’s 60th meeting will take place at Sha Tin on April 3. If Ng maintains anything approaching his current pace, the title will be as good as his by then.
