The Michael Freedman-trained Silverfield might have been unlucky not to score last time out at Happy Valley but the grey gets his chance to atone for that in the Indian Recreation Club Challenge Cup (1,650m) on Wednesday night.

Early in the season, Silverfield was one of Freedman’s first winners here when he bolted in at Sha Tin but the gelding was then disadvantaged by a series of wide draws and other circumstances that didn’t allow him to get into his races.

That changed on March 21, when the eight-year-old finally pulled a good gate and was run down late by Roman Impero in a similar event to this one and there was reason to believe that he should have been the winner.

Jockey Derek Leung Ka-chun actually followed the eventual winner but obviously was concerned that the leaders might have been getting it too easily and he made his move early to counter that.

In doing so, though, he went around Roman Impero, who was able to get onto his back and get a drag into the race and have the last run at him.

Douglas Whyte rode Roman Impero that night and probably knew he had been a little fortunate to win so, with Leung suspended, he will be quite happy to be the jockey on Silverfield.

Once again, timing will be everything in a race of tactics where the pace looks moderate, most likely set by Happy Spirit or Majestic Endeavour but open to dispute after connections of some other runners have assessed the map.

One query is Lucky Girl (Tommy Berry), who looks a great chance anyway, but who has been known to lead at times and went back to that tactic recently in a couple of longer races. He has probably done better ridden quietly but, in a race without much speed, will connections roll the dice?

Meanwhile, Silverfield will be sitting behind the leaders from gate five and waiting for his chance to unleash his sharp turn of foot.
