The Singapore Turf Club Trophy (1,200m) looks a worthy highlight of Sunday’s meeting and Born In China gets his chance to bring his form to Sha Tin.

This race could certainly pass for a Group Three event and quite a few will be using it as a pathway to the Group Two Sprint Cup and Group One Chairman’s Sprint Prize, so it isn’t a pushover for any runner.

While top weight Amazing Kids has to be respected in any 1,200m race and gets the right pace scenario, he does have to concede a lot of handicap weight to some talented horses in their own right, including the Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained Born In China (Douglas Whyte).

The form book says no wins from eight starts at Sha Tin and four wins and five placings from 10 starts at Happy Valley for Born In China, and the natural inclination is the assume he is better at the Valley, but that doesn’t tell the full story.

If we delve into their past, we can find the day in Class Two at Sha Tin where Born In China ran Amazing Kids to just over a length when both carried 132 pounds, but there will be 12 pounds between them on Sunday.

There isn’t a lot wrong with Born In China’s Sha Tin form at 1,200m and, if he brings his recent Valley sprint form, he should be right in the finish.

This looks a race for run-on horses, with the very speedy Fabulous One and Peniaphobia engaged and even the likes of Wah May Friend and Not Listenin’tome have high-class speed.

Born In China has been taking up a closer position recently from good draws at the Valley but is likely to be further back from gate eight, with the pace on and closing strongly.

An interesting danger looks to be Winner’s Way (Zac Purton), who drops back to his first run over 1,200m after contesting mostly 1,400m and mile races since he arrived and even tried 1,800m. He races on the lead over further but, with a guarantee of pace, it wouldn’t shock if Purton gave Winner’s Way a chance to be a chaser. He won his first Hong Kong start coming from well back in the field, so he can race that way.

House Of Fun (Karis Teetan) also looks a powerful chance for John Size, sitting just behind the fast lead as he did when beaten as a favourite two runs back but that was with 133 pounds on board and today he has 113. He didn’t have perfect luck behind Born In China at the Valley last start and that looks a key form reference in a wide open race.
