Danny Shum Chap-shing’s first starter Golden Effort disappointed on Wednesday night at Happy Valley in the Class Four but the performance of another new runner, Affluence Start, offered some consolation.

Stable followers got their fingers burned with Golden Effort in race four when the three-year-old having his first start anywhere appeared to have his chance and failed.

Two races later though, Affluence Start’s strong second first-up in Class Three looked full of promise.

It was a race fought out by finishers, which helped him, but Affluence Start had looked to go well in his trials leading into his first local run and this effort backed up that view.

In Australia, as Ubatuba, Affluence Start was fairly well tried with 12 starts for three wins in Sydney and its environs, and the one aspect of his form that did look a concern pre-race was that he had done plenty of racing on wet tracks, including two of his wins.

It proved not to be a problem though as Affluence Start coped well with the ground and probably handled the distance as well as he might have done.

In Sydney, his trainer tried him more often over 1,400m and even a mile, so this first-up run over what might be an insufficient 1,200m augurs well for the future.

Another first-up Private Purchase on the night was Simply Brilliant for Frankie Lor Fu-chuen and, although many expected him to win, his second to an airborne Super Fluke was an excellent introduction.

From the championship-leading yard, Simply Brilliant had trialled eye-catchingly well and he had his chance before being run down late but will improve for the race and more ground, despite both his wins in England coming over Wednesday night’s 1,200m distance.

Those were two-year-old races and probably don’t reflect the ultimate requirements of this son of Frankel as he matures. He performed well over further, without winning, after turning three and the latest of those appearances was a sixth in the Britannia Stakes at Ascot, so Simply Brilliant looks ready to carry on a proud tradition of success for PPs sourced from that race.
