Give champion trainer John Size a couple more months and his top-line team is going to overshadow that of John Moore and it has been a long time since that was true.

Before Sunday’s meeting at Sha Tin, Moore had seven horses rated 110-plus and Size had six but rising star four-year-old Nothingilikemore is on the cusp of joining that group and Beat The Clock showed he isn’t going to be long out of it either with a sensational resuming win.

Beat The Clock was the final leg of a Joao Moreira treble and the third for Size as well as he made a mistake at the start but still swept home from last under top weight in the Class Two over 1,200m, running 0.08 seconds slower than the Jockey Club Sprint and faster sectionals.

“And carried more weight than them too, so it was a good effort,” said Size, who was uncharacteristically bullish about the four-year-old.

“He was a three-year-old last season with a good record and you’ve always got to figure they’ll have something more to give as four-year-olds. He did get beaten a few times but there were always excuses.”

Beat The Clock might have had an excuse had he been defeated on Sunday too, as Moreira reported that the Hinchinbrook gelding didn’t miss the kick – he was busy lashing out with one in the barriers when they opened.

“I had to deal with that problem and stay cool but I said to John that that’s now a second plan with him and maybe even a first – we can ride him quiet and he flashes home,” Moreira said.

Beat the Clock will head towards the Classic Mile and a meeting with Nothingilikemore in January, where Size will find out if both of them can run 1,600m.

“Maybe ridden quiet like that Beat the Clock can run a mile, maybe he can’t,” Size said. “We’ll see, but they’ll be going in well handicapped against their own age.”

Dinozzo and Jockey Club Sprint winner Mr Stunning were the other legs of Size’s three-timer.
