Dirt meetings are not usually a source of horses to follow and Wednesday night’s offering was standard for the most part but first starter Pick Number One highlighted both his own future prospects with a good win but also gave a pointer to a winner on Sunday.
A son of Darci Brahma, whose stock definitely show a liking for the dirt surface, Pick Number One was comfortable beating the in-form Endearing, who improved on what he had been doing and will be winning again soon himself.
Pick Number One did everything right on debut, began well, rolled through to be with the lead soon after the start and looked hard to beat from there, while Endearing and Joao Moreira spent 600m of the race trying to overcome an outside barrier before finishing well late.
So Pick Number One looks a horse to follow on his own account – and his trials suggest he handles the turf just as well – but his forward showing also acts as a pointer for Conte at Sha Tin this Sunday.

He too will be making his debut in the fourth race, and the John Size-trained four-year-old hasn’t had any favours at the barrier draw but he clearly has the talent required.
Conte and Pick Number One recently went to the line together in a barrier trial, lengths ahead of the field, and without much between them. That augurs very well for his first appearance and he faces up to a relatively unspectacular field in the Class Four.
Our other horse to follow from Wednesday night is High Five, who ran home stoutly for fourth behind Mythical Emperor.
Those types of runs can be deceptive and High Five has not been a prolific winner in his career but it was more that High Five was back down in Class Three again that caught the eye.
He is better than that grade and, if he draws a kinder gate next time, High Five can win again and he looks suited at any of the tracks, with good form at Happy Valley as well as both surfaces at Sha Tin.
