The Tony Cruz yard is on the improve and Multigogo can take another step along that path by breaking through for a maiden victory in the Longines Cup (1,200m) at Happy Valley on Wednesday night.

With the rail in the C+3 position, we can expect horses with good gates and who have the speed to take advantage of those draws will be well-placed and Multigogo (Jack Wong Ho-nam) shapes like he was born for those parameters.

He is a very quick horse who will be too fast early for the two horses drawn beneath him, Look Eras and Manful Star (Umberto Rispoli), and should find the lead comfortably.

On paper, his main rival for that position in Exceptional Desire (Zac Purton), but the Chris So Wai-yin-trained gelding led last time in a very slow pace, is giving 16 pounds to Multigogo and Purton probably won’t be keen to get into a head-to-head war by looking to cross.

Tony Cruz’s team is starting to fire and Circuit Hassler can help lead the charge

It will suit both him and Multigogo better to just take his place outside the leader’s hindquarters, softening the pace and making the on pace advantage even more potent.

Multigogo hasn’t been the easiest to get going but always showed some talent at the trials and Cruz has tweaked the gelding’s gear this season to get the best out of him.

Although beaten last start at Sha Tin behind E Master, his run was as good as anything he had produced yet, as he was attacked in the lead but still kept fighting to go down by less than a length while the others who served it up to him were well beaten.

Tonight promises him more of a chance to relax and Multigogo will give a good kick from the home turn if he is able to save his energy for that stage of the race.

Exceptional Desire looks the obvious danger, while Manful Star will be tracking up the rail behind them ready to launch a strong finish and get over them if the leaders have done too much too soon.
