Hot favourite Rapper Dragon has created history by becoming the first horse to sweep the four-year-old series with a dominant victory in the BMW Hong Kong Derby at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Having already claimed the Classic Mile and the Classic Cup, Rapper Dragon was all the rage with punters, who sent him out a 1.8 chance, and he didn’t disappoint.

The wet weather threw a spanner in the works but Rapper Dragon handled it with aplomb to deliver champion jockey Joao Moreira his first Hong Kong Derby while big-race trainer John Moore added to his record with a sixth success in the HK$18 million feature.

It was a perfectly judged ride from the Magic Man, who settled Rapper Dragon just behind the speed before swinging to the outside at the top of the straight and putting a break on them.

For a moment it looked as though he could be run down by the popular Pakistan Star, but he rallied to win by a length and three-quarters, cementing his spot in the record books.

Pakistan Star was strong over the 2,000m, settling last before finishing off strongly for second while Rapper Dragon’s stablemate Beauty Generation came third.
