Two horses who are going to make the grade up in class after winning on Wednesday night are Lucky Profit and Strong Foundation, despite both carrying a tag of talented but troubled.

Perhaps it was the addition of Joao Moreira to Lucky Profit but everything fell right into place and he looked the horse most expected he would be after running on for third in his griffin debut some time ago.

Of course, since then he has had a throat problem but it seems his surgery off-season has done the trick, at least for now, with Lucky Profit stringing together four starts this season for four very sound efforts in the bottom grade.

With that kind of consistency, we can assume that all is well with his breathing until shown to be otherwise and that makes him a good thing going to a light weight at the bottom of Class Four provided he doesn’t bump into anything special.

In putting it all together on Wednesday, Lucky Profit zipped down the straight in a finishing section faster than any runner all night, except Red Kylin in the Class Three to end the card. But Red Kylin carried only 114 pounds running home a length faster than him, while Lucky Profit produced his finish carrying 129 pounds.

Moreira was also the pilot on Strong Foundation in the Class Three 1,650m and hopefully he will stay with the gelding when he climbs a class because the same kind of performance will see him winning in Class Two as well.

Trainer Francis Lui Kin-wai echoed the comments of the horse’s other previous trainers, Caspar Fownes and Ricky Yiu Poon-fai, in suggesting that soundness issues have held Strong Foundation back in his career.

But it is noteworthy that he has raced with more frequency this season – Wednesday was his fifth run of the campaign, even despite a change of stables in November, and he only managed seven runs in all of last season.

That does suggest he is holding together well right now, so this is the time to follow him in for another win in the next grade as he does certainly have the ability to do it.
