The wait was over quickly at Sha Tin as Joao Moreira took only until the second race to topple Douglas Whyte's season win record and the Brazilian then set about showcasing his talent with a four-timer that included one more candidate for ride of the season.

It's only my second season in Hong Kong and breaking the record means a lot to me. Luckily, so many people have been helping me here

"I am very happy," said Moreira, who was probably just as relieved to have the record out of the way after having it be the subject of every question for the past month.

"It's only my second season in Hong Kong and breaking the record means a lot to me. Luckily, so many people have been helping me here.

"Honestly speaking, before I came to Hong Kong, I wouldn't have expected I could achieve this.

"From now on all I can do is to keep working hard to win more races until the end of the season."

David Hall-trained Penang Hall turned things around completely from his disappointing debut to take the Magic Man to a record 115 wins and Moreira added Smart Guy, Sun Jewellery and Athena Baby in quick succession as he got on with his next target of topping 130 for the term.

They were all nice rides, but if the essence of Moreira's magic was to be presented in just one performance, then his win on John Size-trained newcomer Sun Jewellery was that performance.

A wide gate that looked sticky pre-race with plenty of speed inside him was shrugged off by Moreira who jumped, steadied, ducked and darted and was suddenly third along the rail and almost surprised Neil Callan (Great Charm), who drew two, when he found Sun Jewellery probing up the rail inside him at one point before straightening for home. Sun Jewellery was briefly held up on heels, navigated around that and then Moreira even held him up deliberately for a little longer when clear, while major rival Lucky Bubbles was surging to the front.

Sun Jewellery picked him up quickly in the final 150m, drew away to win like a horse going places and Size was about as complimentary as he gets as he added one more to his list of highly promising rising four-year-olds - he said he likes him.

"I like him. He won two races in Victoria like he had plenty of ability and he settled in well here and got to the races pretty quickly," Size said. "There wasn't much more I could do with him at home so I thought I'd bring him to races and see if he could win one before the season was out.

"The race probably turned out a bit different to what we expected - I thought there might be three or four who would kick up under him early, not six - but he got in and got out, so it ended well. He was further back than expected but in the run you couldn't have wished for anything better - sitting back off the speed watching the others working."

Sun Jewellery has yet to be tried beyond short sprints, but Size said he had some reasons to be optimistic that the gelding might not be limited that way.

"It's difficult to tell until you test them, but he's certainly kind enough in a race and has the length and the stride of a horse that might run 1,600m," he said.

David Hall said the addition of blinkers had been enough to get Penang Hall to bring his trial form to the races after disappointing first time out.

"He got it all wrong the first time, today he got it right with the blinkers and overcame a draw on the wrong side, so he did a good job in what looked a pretty average field," he said. "My father doesn't buy many these days, but he saw this guy in a Strathalbyn trial. Probably not many come here from that sort of background, but dad liked the trial and thought he'd be right for here. Looks like he was right."
