Dubai Turf winner will not travel for the May mile feature

Runaway Dubai Turf winner Solow will not be among the international visitors for the spring features after owners, the Wertheimer brothers, expressed a desire to avoid champion miler Able Friend. Solow was seen as a potential Champions Mile visitor after his four and a quarter length success, but Jockey Club chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges said the owners were now looking elsewhere. "Taking on Able Friend on his home turf was seen as a monumental task," Engelbrecht-Bresges said. Andrew Hawkins

Jockey's day cut short, while replacement Alex Lai also suffers

Keith Yeung Ming-lun's day was cut short with a back injury after he rode a winner and his replacement in the Premier Plate, Alex Lai Hoi-wing, got more than he bargained for as he attracted a three-day careless riding suspension aboard third-placed Packing Llaregyb. Yeung was stood down by medicos following race four, but a race earlier Yeung partnered Danny Shum Chap-shing's debutant Lucky Year (pictured) to an easy win. The three-year-old became the 17th individual winner for Holy Roman Emperor in Hong Kong. Michael Cox

Derek Leung brings up 20th winner for the season

Trainer Peter Ho Leung reckons there are two versions of Class Four winner Solar Kingdom, one that finds the rail and one that doesn't, with a world of difference between them ability-wise. "If he doesn't get to the fence, he has no idea and he couldn't win in Class Five, but get him out in front with a rail and he might win in Class Three," Ho said after Derek Leung Ka-chun bounced the five-year-old out of gate 10 and pushed hard to find the front. "He is a horse with a big, long stride and that's why he likes it out in front, especially on his own," Leung said. Michael Cox
