Read the responses to this week’s Write to Win prompt, and choose the answer you like most.

Sheep: If I could implement a new school rule, it would be that every student must participate in a “Wellness Period” every week. Recent studies have shown that the suicide rate of students in Hong Kong has risen, which is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. This is primarily due to the academic pressure they put on themselves, which can cause stress, anxiety and burnout. Therefore, during “Wellness Periods”, students can participate in different activities to unwind and recharge, such as meditation, yoga, music and more. By prioritising self-care and nurturing students’ well-being, schools can help them thrive academically, socially and emotionally, preparing them for future success.

Cat: If I could add one school rule, it would be this: teachers should not identify students who report bullying. I have seen my friends being pushed around, bullied and annoyed, but they have never told the school authorities for fear of being deemed a “snitch” or a “tattle-tale”. I always ask them not to care what others say and to tell the teacher, but they shake it off and say it’s nothing. I write this round’s piece as a reminder to Hong Kong students that no matter who you are or where you come from, you should never brush off bullying and say that it’s nothing. You were not born to satisfy other people.

Tiger: A new school rule I would implement would be to give creative subjects as much importance as logical ones. For a long time, subjects such as maths, science and English have been given pronounced priority, pressuring students to excel and gain exceeding grades. However, subjects such as design, art and drama are often neglected. The efforts made by creative students are frequently overlooked by the more logical-minded pupils, leading to untold challenges and stress when choosing career pathways. Hence, making it a regulation for all students to appreciate and equally treat the subject choices of other students, regardless of the type, would allow for a much more accepting and friendlier school environment.

Write to Win (Round 3): What is an underrated experience everyone should try?

Panda: Don’t get me wrong – as much as I love school, life isn’t just about doing homework, making deadlines and getting good grades. It would help if you learned how to work well with others, be accountable and thrive in the spirit of competition. Sports can bridge the gap between these skill sets and academics. Hence, I suggest this new school rule – all students must participate in sports. Being a part of sports offers countless benefits beyond physical health. Sports can teach you how to be a good leader and team member while strengthening your mentality. Being surrounded by teammates and coaches allows students to feel a sense of unity, contributing to personal growth.

Dog: Did you know that one in four Hong Kong students suffer from depression? The intensity of one of the most challenging education systems in the world leaves students little room to take a breather. Therefore, if I could implement one new school rule, I would propose a mandatory counselling session for all pupils. The sessions will be conducted monthly and individually to ensure confidentiality, familiarity and comfort. Lasting for an hour, these sessions are safe spaces to vent pent-up emotions and talk to a trusted professional about their worries and anxieties. This initiative can significantly improve the well-being of students and catalyse mental health awareness. It is also vital in relieving students’ stress.

Lion: Every school day should start with music. All students will take turns to share their music each morning in class. Students can use any form of music to express themselves, solo or in a group. It could be singing, playing instruments or even listening to a song. Music is a magical universal language which can bring people together by evoking emotions. It is relaxing, motivating and inspirational. Through music, students can support and resonate with one another, infusing the classroom with positive energy and a sense of unity. This would help lighten their moods, alleviate stress and create a better atmosphere for learning. I hope this new school rule can bring joy to every student at the start of the day.

Monkey: My new school rule will be to add “Exploration Hour”, during which students would indulge in their hobbies – making art or playing sports – without using technology. This dedicated hour is a crucial digital detox, allowing students to break from technology and reconnect with their surroundings and interests. Students could also have a much-needed break from their stressful school day to do something they enjoy. Providing a space focused on their hobbies will help them alleviate their academic stress and unwind and recharge for the rest of their tiresome day. Ultimately, this exclusive hour is to promote mindfulness and their passions in daily life.
