Hong Kong’s beloved giant rubber duck has recently made a splash on social media, reappearing after 10 years away from the city – and this time, it brought a friend. Many have flocked to Victoria Harbour to snap a pic with the Double Ducks and snatch up all sorts of ducky-themed merchandise.

In honour of our feathery friends, let’s look at some of the most well-known and beloved ducks in pop culture.

Donald Duck

One of Disney’s most recognisable characters is Donald Duck. With his fiery temper, semi-intelligible speech, and signature sailor suit, he holds a special place in the hearts of Disney fans. Although his aggressive nature can get him into silly situations, we can’t help but root for him.

Donald first appeared on screen in 1934’s The Wise Little Hen and was a key character in Disney’s World War II propaganda short films. He continues to be a popular comic book character, especially in European countries like Sweden and Finland.

Fun fact: not many people know Donald Duck has a middle name, but he does – and it is Fauntleroy.

Daffy Duck

“You’re despicable,” spoken with his iconic lisp, is Daffy Duck’s most famous line. The anthropomorphic black duck, known for his pride and sarcastic personality, is a popular Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies character, as well Bugs Bunny’s rival and occasional best friend.

He even had his own TV show for a while, called The Daffy Duck Show, and ranked No 14 on TV Guide’s list of the Top 50 best cartoon characters.

Scrooge McDuck

Another famous Disney duck is none other than Scrooge McDuck. Named after Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens’ 1843 novel A Christmas Carol, he is Donald Duck’s uncle. Generally shown sporting a top hat, Scrooge is known for his extreme wealth, frugality, and grouchiness, and he enjoys diving into a giant pool of money.

Although he has been featured in many comics and shorts, he’s perhaps best known as a character in the critically-acclaimed television series DuckTales and its extended franchise.

Business magazine Forbes has tried to estimate how much money he has, putting his net worth at US$44.1 billion in 2011.

Psyduck

This yellow, water-type Pokemon stands out as an icon in the franchise. Introduced as one of the original 151 Pokemon in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games, he is known for his vacant stare and constant headache.

In the Pokemon TV series, it becomes a running gag that Misty accidentally releases the confused, absent-minded Psyduck instead of the Pokemon she actually wanted to use.

Pekkle

The Sanrio universe – best known for Hello Kitty – also has its own duck character, the kind, good-natured Pekkle. He is a white feathered duck with orange legs, feet, and a bill, and wears a blue T-shirt. Pekkle is also musically inclined; he is a singer and particularly enjoys tap dancing.

B.Duck

B.Duck was created by the founder of Semk Products, Hui Ha-lam, in 2005. This bright yellow duck has captured the hearts of many in the Asian market, resulting in the expansion of B.Duck characters – and even a B.Duck baby series of products.
