Attacks targeting the police are rare in Malaysia, where firearms ownership is strictly controlled.

Friday’s attack, which occurred before dawn in the Ulu Tiram district around 30 minutes from the causeway to Singapore, involved a lone attacker who may have had links to the JI network in Johor state, according to police chief Razarudin Husain.

The suspect was shot dead during the attack.

“The suspect’s father is [a] Jemaah Islamiah [member],” Razarudin told reporters, saying a raid on the suspect’s house revealed “lines from the Koran” plastered on the walls and adding that five people have been detained including the suspect’s father.
