Singapore’s hawker culture faces robot revolution

After failing to find a chef for his hawker stall, a former Singaporean engineer spent months training a robot he acquired from Wuhan to perfect Hokkien mee, a quintessential noodle dish in the city state. Ang Chip Hong made a rare career switch two years ago when he quit the comfort of his job at Singapore Management University to enter the hawker trade full-time. The 53-year-old opened his stall, Wok AI, in Margaret Drive Hawker Centre in November 2024 and was soon met with the perennial challenge hawkers face – finding local staff.
