Recap by phillip woo

Favourite Big Fortune never looked back after emerging with the lead 800m out for a first win at his 16th start and first for first season trainer Douglas Whyte. Aurora Pegasus closed reasonably well after a deep run with cover in midfield to grab second 60m out. He's heading in the right direction and will be winning races shortly. Master Albert closed nicely to just grab third after pushing his way into the open with two wider out at the 300m travelling near the back. He's well rated off his current mark. Shouson came up flat 100m out after looming a chance mid-straight following a handy run on the fence. Farm Bumper was one-paced following a prominent run. He needs more time. Momentum Happy made some ground late after a deep run near the back. It wasn't a bad effort first-up over a trip likely short of his best. Specked late, Speedy Optimist ran out of petrol at the 150m mark after a prominent run without cover the entire trip.

Racing Incident Report

Race Four: (14) - THE TUNG WAH GROUP OF HOSPITALS CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) - Class 4 - 1200Meters

GENERAL CASTLEDALE was withdrawn on 6.9.19 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (fever) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FARM BUMPER (K C Leung).

Before being allowed to race again, GENERAL CASTLEDALE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

From wide barriers, GALAXY RACER and MASTER ALBERT were steadied and shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

After travelling a short distance, AURORA PEGASUS was momentarily crowded for room between SPEEDY OPTIMIST and CALLING THE SHOTS.

After beginning only fairly, MOMENTUM HAPPY was ridden along from the outside barrier, however, was slow to muster speed and near the 1100 Metres was steadied to obtain cover.

Making the turn near the 900 Metres, SUPERB AGILITY got its head on the side and lay out towards the heels of MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE.

Approaching the 800 Metres, MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE was steadied when crowded for room between SHOUSON and AURORA PEGASUS which was taken in by CALLING THE SHOTS (G van Niekerk) which shifted in when awkwardly placed behind SPEEDY OPTIMIST which at this time was being steadied in an attempt to obtain cover.

G van Niekerk was advised that whilst there were some circumstances to this incident, nonetheless, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have made an earlier attempt to shift to the outside of SPEEDY OPTIMIST to prevent horses being crowded for room to his inside.

G van Niekerk was severely reprimanded and told to exercise far greater care in similar circumstances.

When MISCHIEVOUS SUNDAE was hampered, SUPERB AGILITY, which was following, was checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence.

Throughout the race, SPEEDY OPTIMIST travelled wide and without cover and making the Home Turn got its head on the side and lay out.

Over the concluding stages, SUPERB AGILITY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FARM BUMPER.

When questioned regarding the performance of CALLING THE SHOTS, G van Niekerk stated that it was intended to lead if possible.

He said despite being ridden along in the early stages, CALLING THE SHOTS did not show enough speed to be able to cross runners to its inside and for this reason after the 1100 Metres he commenced to steady CALLING THE SHOTS to obtain cover.

He said after being awkwardly placed close to the heels of SPEEDY OPTIMIST after the 800 Metres, CALLING THE SHOTS was required to race further back in the field than had been intended.

He said his mount did not travel strongly at any stage of the race and he was required to commence to ride it along after the 600 Metres to maintain its position.

He added he continued to ride CALLING THE SHOTS along rounding the Home Turn, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and then was disappointing in its failure to finish off the race.

A veterinary inspection of CALLING THE SHOTS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

After the race, J Moreira was not able to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of SUPREME PLUS.

He said he was able to obtain a forward position as instructed and SUPREME PLUS had travelled satisfactorily in the early and middle stages.

He said however that SUPREME PLUS came under pressure at the 500 Metres when racing outside the eventual winner BIG FORTUNE and after this did not finish off the race.

A veterinary inspection of SUPREME PLUS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

BIG FORTUNE and AURORA PEGASUS were sent for sampling.
