Recap by phillip woo
Raging favourite Waikuku defied a wide and without cover trip worse than midfield to reel in Good Standing in the final few strides for a third win from four starts. It was a very tough win and the Derby dream continues for this smart type. Good Standing did everything right but get the win after hitting the front 300m out travelling one off behind the leaders. It was good effort carrying top weight following a last-start win. Dragon General grabbed a placing 30m out after sitting prominent on the fence. The veteran continues to race well. King Opie had his chance chasing the leader Gold Win. He'll need to catch his breath in this grade following back-to-back wins. Gold Win gradually faded when headed following a change in tactics. He's still acclimatising but it was a better run. Preciousship made some ground from behind midfield in a better second-up effort. He appreciated the step up to 1,400m and a mile might be ideal as well.
