Don’t be alarmed if you spot a giant, errant red ball wedged into Hong Kong’s most recognisable landmarks while walking around the city this week. It’s not you, it’s part of the RedBall Hong Kong public art installation by artist Kurt Perschke, which runs until December 15 as part of the Business of Design Week (BODW), marking its 48th stop in a global tour that began in 2001.

All in all, the ball will pop up at 10 culturally significant locations across Hong Kong, encouraging participants to rethink familiar locations as it moves through the city each day from 11am to 6pm.

“Public art makes us think differently about locations we know and love,” says Perschke, as the initiative aims to foster engagement with public spaces, art, and architecture, transforming everyday experiences into opportunities for artistic interaction. “It’s about bringing new energy to the familiar.”

The installation kicked off at Central Pier 10 on Friday December 6, where the RedBall was wedged into the pier’s colonnaded structure against the backdrop of Victoria Harbour. Over the following days, it will bounce across the harbour to Tsim Sha Tsui, integrating itself into the Hong Kong Museum of Art (HKMoA) and the West Kowloon Cultural District, before returning to Central on December 9, where it will spend the day in the middle of Chater Garden. The next day, it will move to Kowloon Public Pier 4.

Other stops on the RedBall’s busy schedule include the Asia Society in Admiralty, Jardine House in Central, the historic Blake Pier in Stanley, and the Model Boat Pool at Victoria Park. The final stop on December 15 will be at the Lion’s Point View Pavilion at The Peak, offering the perfect photo-op overlooking Hong Kong’s most iconic backdrop.
