Donald Trump, the presumed Republican presidential nominee in this year’s US election, was shot at a presidential campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, in a deadly act of violence that is being investigated as an attempted assassination.

A rally attendee died and two were critically wounded in the incident.

China joined the chorus of international concern about the shooting, with the foreign ministry saying on Sunday that Chinese President Xi Jinping had expressed his sympathies to Trump.

Trump, 78, posted on Truth Social, saying: “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.

“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening,” Trump said.
